Edit: i'm done arguing about this, i'm trying to avoid arguing about people's interest in destroying the PS3 and its games (and you cannot say it isnt prevalent, even here, because there is clear bias). So i wont say anything more about Lair. If you wont take the chance to atleast rent it and try it for yourself, then it is your choice. But you will be missing out on a very good game.

    Fin.

Uhm, a lot of us own one. We're not trying to destroy it. We're all just sitting here, delusional, praying for those games that reaffirm our faith in the console. It's not that we're actively tearing down the PS3 games that come out. After spending $600.00 I just can't afford to buy too many games that won't knock my socks off. Lair didn't interest me in the beginning, so I'm not let down. I mean, the thing is, you're arguing your opinion. Just as a game review is just one guy's opinion. Professional reviews aren't the law. IGN is not the judge and jury.

We understand that you disagree. But please just stop insulting the poor reviews and praising the good one. Stop being so harsh with everyone. Stop getting so heated. It's just a game.

      Okay, one more comment.

Before making a judgement of the game, rent it if you can. Just rent it and come up with your own opinion.

Thats all i have been asking, even if it didnt come out that way. Just form your own opinion, instead of going by the reviews, which again, are not indicative about the experience many gamers are actually having with the game.

Now that really was my last comment.

Yes, that is what matters. most of the english-speaking gamer population hates king's field (without ever having played it), and I don't let that stop me from enjoying the series. Well, no... I kind of have to, since it's because of those people who bash the series without ever once playing it that led to it being killed. um... bad comparisson? oh, wait, here we go. armored core. we both love armored core. reviewers hate it and bash it constantly saying it refuses to change despite so many constant changes to the AC design process and gameplay. yet From Software keeps pumping them out like there's no tomorrow.

I'll rent Lair and judge for myself. Too many of my favorite games are hated by reviewers for me to trust their scores for anything without playing it myself.

And if you dont enjoy it, i'm fine with that. I just want people to find a way to judge for themselves. At this point, that is all i am asking.

            Re: Lair

I would rent it but I don't have a videostore to rent PS3 games anywhere near me.

            Ah well.

I remember some rental stores rented out consoles, but I think it'd be too risky renting out a PS3 for cheaper than to buy it at retail, they'd never see them again.

That's why they take your name and address, verify it with a drivers license or other form of ID, then if you don't return it they sue you.

                    Re: Lair

Joystiq's metareview of Lair is pretty interesting. They point out the disparity between the reviews and the previews shortly before them.
IGN (49/100) laments the "horribly unresponsive" controls and "god-awful lock-on system," quickly labeling the whole affair as "a mission worthy of swallowing the business end of a shotgun to avoid." Just so we're clear, they're implying that you'd rather kill yourself instead of playing Lair. Harsh, and certainly surprising if you read the E3 preview -- a few weeks earlier, the game was "surprisingly easy to pick up and play" with dragon controls that became "simple with practice."

Gamespot (45/100) thinks Lair is beautiful... a "beautiful disaster," that is. The review's third sentence claims it's "stunning to watch", but that comes after the second sentence which declares the game to have "one of the worst control schemes ever devised." That's assuming you even make it that far, as the first sentence is simply, "You shouldn't play Lair." If that sounds bitter, it's probably because you remember the sweet taste of the last preview: "Flying the dragon around isn't tough, but there is a bit of a learning curve." Apparently it was more like a 90-degree angle.

1UP (60/100) was right to be concerned about the controls in an earlier version of the game. Here, the game is deemed frustrating and "one of those games where you die or fail through no fault of your own." The article also reinforces the belief that Factor 5 is still stuck in the icy wastelands of Hoth, complete with dinosaurs waiting to trip over your dragon tow cable.

That's standard. When have you ever read a preview for a game that was countless praise?

But it isn't like a review will truly effect the future of a game. How many Armored Core and Dynasty Warriors games are out there despite reviews? As for Kings Field, I never knew anything about it until you talked about it. So my guess is it didn't get a sequel do to the lack of broad appeal. Look at the Shenmue series, I will never see a third one, but the fact is just that barely anyone likes that game and for valid reasons. Its hard to convince other gamers why driving a forklift or moving books is cool. At the same time games that haven't gotten a good reception with critics see sequels all the damn time, so don't worry Jer, you'll get your damn Lair sequel. Because just like giant robots and ninjas, throw a dragon on the cover and you have a seller on your hands.

EGM frequently says stuff like "this game isn't looking too good."

                            Re: Lair

1Up Yours tried to explain why there was such a disonance between the previews and reviews. According to them, the small level slices that they were given to preview were not reflective of the final game. Given the larger levels, the controls showed their true colors, and the lack of a radar became a major headache.

They kind of compared it to a trailer, where if you slice something up into small enough pieces, even the largest piece of crap can look great.

It's also an open secret in the business that if you bag a game in a preview the company will probably stop sending you preview builds. They also realize that previews are works-in-progress, and give them the benefit of the doubt. They have a tendency to figure that most flaws will be taken care of in the final build.

lack of radar wouldnt bug me. it's a dragon. dragons do not have radar displays. so I could easily forgive lack of radar.
