Re: is ANYONE impressed by Lair?

It kind of works like a remote for the PS3, hence the name. When you activate it, you ARE controlling the PS3 menu in the PSP. Not 100% sure everything it lets you do though. I think you are unable to play games unless they specify. Haven't tried it more than just going, oh cool, the XMB is moving.

Re: is ANYONE impressed by Lair?

I've only mentioned it once here, compared to the dozens of posts i have made at the IGN boards.

      THE REVIEWERS ARE WRONG!

I dont know what game these reviewers were playing, but it was NOT Lair. Just about everyone that is not a professional reviewer that has played Lair says that he controls are nowhere near as bad as the reviewers made it out to be. There have been dozens of posts at the IGN boards by different people that cant comprehend how they reviewed the game so low.

I agree, the game is not difficult to get into, and once you get the hang of the controls, they are easy and intuitive.

Edit: For the naysayers, if i have to mention the negatives to the game, they would be the occasional lack of direction, and knowing where your next objective is, and the targetting could have used more work. Everything else, gameplay, story, graphics, presentation, are fantastic!

This is one time, where Play Magazine didnt over rate the game by much at all.

I'm playing it. Not really impressed. The ground troops look like poop.
Took me 15 minutes to remember how to change my signature, and this is all I came up with.

Uh...are you playing on an HD TV in 1080i/p?
Did you actually stop long enough to look at the small soldiers that number in the high hundreds, and if so, did you die quickly and painfully?

If you could play through the bridge level, and tell me you arent impressed with the game, there is something wrong with you. But again, its all opinion. The majority of non-professional opinions have been positive.

PLEASE let be people be entitled to their opinions, sir. You can't tell people there is something wrong with them... but it's all opinion. Notice how you have to say non-professional. Some people might not like it (GASP!). Maybe it is, unfortunately, most of the "professionals" that aren't liking this game. It feels like you're scouring the internet to defend a game.

I don't mean to hate, but you're reiterating the same stuff in multiple topics. Calm it down, ok? We get that you like it, it's your opinion.

Re: is ANYONE impressed by Lair?

yeah, if someone doesnt like the game, then that is FINE. if they think the groudn troops look bad (which I believe they do) look bad, thats FINE.

if you want to tell people that something is wrong with them because they have these opinions, that is NOT FINE.

likewise, if you like the game, that too is FINE, but you're not going to badger people into liking it. come on dude, realize how you're acting.

I have to agree. I'd like to think that I've been one of the most fair to the PS3 lately, but the fact that all these reviews are showing up negative does send warning flares up in the sky.

That doesn't mean everyone will hate the game. Persona 2, one of my favorite games of all time, got 7s pretty much across the board. I disagreed, it happens.

However, trying to put forth some theory that reviewers are trying to pull a fast one seems a little crazy. A better thing to say is to acknowledge that there have been bad reviews, but you still like it. You'll come off a lot better than shouting about how they weren't playing the real game.

I haven't had time to look at the soldiers while I'm eating them or burning them to a crisp.

Re: is ANYONE impressed by Lair?

I'm sorry, i shouldnt have said that there was something wrong with him, but if you didnt notice, my very next words were "But again, its all opinion". Everyone is entitled to their opinion, good or bad.

And i havent been scouring the internet for anything, hell, there are atleast 50-100 people on IGN alone, that actually post, that have been saying how much better it is than the reviews have been leading people to believe.

For once, Play's review seems to be nearly spot on with most of the actual GAMERS that have been playing the game. Their review was a 9, most gamers have been saying that it deserves atleast a 7.something, i personally think it deserves in the 8's. I dont think there is a conspiracy, and i sure as hell am not trying to "badger" people into liking the game.

Personally, i just think that if someone plays the game and doesnt like it fine, but DO NOT base your decision to atleast check out the game, on the "professional" reviews, you must try this game yourself before saying it sucks.

Dragons are overrated (with apologies to RD and Draygone).

Disregard this post. I don't even own a PS3. I just haven't been to sleep yet since Friday night, and you might remember how my posting gets when THAT happens....

Who here has actually said it sucks? You don't need to get so defensive when it comes to games. Hell, I was one of the few poeple that enjoyed Xenosaga 3 when it came out, I would say why I enjoyed it, but I wouldn't call poeple asses or thickheaded that haven't played it and would rip on it.

I was never interested in Lair, and the mediocre reviews don't help, add on your constant jibber jabber, that will just make me want to rip on it more.

                          edit: dammit perversion!

So out of all the terribly "off" reviews they've ever done, their Lair one is spot on... why? they have a reputation for being idiots at Play. what makes THIS review actually matter, when compared to pretty much every other one they've ever done? just because it's Lair?

                              Re: Lair

                              This all reeks of shenanigans.

                              Gabe says:
You couldn't pay us to play Lair any more than we have already. The game has given me a new respect for the professional reviewer, because when a game like Lair hits their desk, they have no recourse. They must tread, as Dante did, down that scarred staircase and into the greasy throat of hell.

The people behind the solid reinvention of Warhawk chose - in their kindness, and in their wisdom - to let the player decide if they want to wrangle their flight gameplay via Sixaxis or the analog sticks, a move that'll prove prescient. Controls aren't the only problem in Lair, though, so altering the controls wouldn't represent a complete solution. You're using those controls to accomplish frustrating, unimaginative, sometimes enigmatic tasks. People will forgive a good game its indulgences if they feel they're being met halfway, and one never gets that impression here. You may find yourself in disbelief an hour into it, the Electronics Boutique receipt crumpled in your fist, trying to correlate Lair's non-stop torrent of anguish and your missing sixty bucks.

I would never ask you to take my word over your own experience, though, and you'll certainly find those online who will bolster you in your choice to purchase. There are some who derive a kind of perverse superiority from their mastery of the game's ambiguous mechanics. For my part, I don't give a good Goddamn if someone has trained themselves to eat **** and like it. The game is not challenging, it's difficult to play, and it's taken many years but I'm ready to begin making this distinction.

This is an indictment of Lair, and not an indictment of the Playstation 3 as a platform like you might see burst online in some flammable thread. Playstation 3 owners will have plenty to crow about soon enough. Heavenly Sword, well... We'll talk about Heavenly Sword later. But
Lair and Sony aren't synonyms, it isn't emblematic of your choice of console. It's just... bad, a raw-feeling launch title that even an additional year could not rescue.

We don't need Lair to be good, and so we don't need to make excuses for it. It has been extremely strange to watch the community react to reviews like the one at IGN, with claims that the site is "known" to be biased against the Playstation 3 - as though a site with IGN's expenses could afford to play such a dangerous game with one of the pillars of the medium. The reality is that IGN delivering a four-point-nine review of a title this anticipated is a sign of their allegiance to the reader. I'm not a fan of the site. IGN.com is not my homepage. But scoring a game this low, so at variance with their average numerics, is the sort of maneuver that should restore faith.

                                Re: Lair

Yeah, whatever. All i know is that i'm enjoying the game very much and MOST of the people that have actually played it are enjoying it, and that is what really matters.

Edit: i'm done arguing about this, i'm trying to avoid arguing about people's interest in destroying the PS3 and its games (and you cannot say it isnt prevalent, even here, because there is clear bias). So i wont say anything more about Lair. If you wont take the chance to atleast rent it and try it for yourself, then it is your choice. But you will be missing out on a very good game.

                                Fin.
