Re: Pirates of the Caribbean....... Savy?
Wow.
A SET is a place where the action is. It's the physical props or setting that is filmed or the aspects of a stage to convey place.
A SET PIECE is a scene in a movie that is a highlight of plot or big in action. They can be considered the focus points of the movie. The battle in the blacksmith and when the pirates are first revealed as cursed are the ones that stand out to me from 1. In 2 there was Sparrow running around in the pole and of course the amazing water wheel fight. These are scenes that define blockbusters and summer movies.
Now, technically, a piece of scenery in theatre can be called a set piece, seeing as it is a piece of the set. I think terms such as prop, setting, and backdrop are more appropriate, but that's a matter of opinion.
The thing is why, when discussing a FILM, would I be talking about theatre sets?

n.
1. A realistic piece of stage scenery constructed to stand by itself.
2. An often brilliantly executed artistic or literary work characterized by a formal pattern.
3.
a. A carefully planned and executed military operation.
b. A situation, activity, or speech planned beforehand and carried out according to a prescribed pattern or formula.
this is also the same opinion that my real life dictonary holds, its acualy the same day words too. technicly its both. a stage peice is both a peice scenery itself and can be an exicuted scene. yes i use a dictonary and no it hasnt helped me spell better.

Tell you guys what.....
Just watch the movie, and then post about the setpieces. Even with your definition, the movie DID have good sequences. The denouement was fantastic.

setpiece is a scene or sequence of scenes (situation) the execution of which requires serious logistical planning (planned out before hand) ... Setpieces are very often planned meticulously using storyboarded, screentests and rehearsals (pattern or formula)Originally posted by Karr Lord of Chaos View Post

Is it just me or does that exactly describe the Film definition of it. Hmm.
So what's the argument about this word again, since we're talking about it in relation to a MOVIE.
Also if you notice the Theater one is two words, the film one is one. But either way, most of the time you use the most specific definition of a word to the current topic if you're using a word with multiple definitions.
So yeah I might be seeing the movie this weekend, and hopefully it will be better than Spider Man 3, but this one I don't have as high hopes for since Pirates is just alright to me.Last edited by thetruecoolness; 05-25-2007, 02:00 AM.
