Alright, how do I get started?

I want to make a Halloween game:

Before I got the first RPG Maker, I read a little thing on gamefaqs that explained all the commands of the game, I think it really helped me get a grasp on the system (I never would've known what the hell a takeover is if I didn't read it).

Anything similar out there for RMXP? I open it up and kinda just shut down looking at the whole thing. Should I just head direct to the user's guide when I get home from work or were there better solutions you guys used?

If I remember correctly, RMXP Unlimited has some really good info on eventing, maps, and settings. But they seem to be down at the moment; hopefully they'll be back online soon.

There's a lot of good info out there. I didn't find the included Help File to be too good, but the context-sensitive help (right-click on a field label or button and choose "What's This?") was pretty good for event commands and database fields.

Mostly, I just tried to create a little test map with a few battles, treasures, etc., and learned as I went along by doing so. Even though there's a lot to take in, RMXP is very intuitive so the learning curve is gentler than it looks like it's going to be - especially if you already understand concepts like variables and conditions. And when I was stumped, I turned to Google. Sometimes it required figuring out the right string to Google, but once I did the answer was always out there.

The in-game help files are a little better than you'd probably expect. There's also a very helpful question mark icon on the top-right corner of each window. Click that and then click the thing you want to know about to get a short description.

If all else fails, ask here! Wavelength and I are pretty smart.

When using events, if you have the "Event Commands" screen open you can right click on each and every command in all 3 screens. Also on each of the functions in each individual event commands sub menu's . It will pop up, "Whats this?" click on it and get an explanation/description for each and every event.

I'm pretty sure you can right click on just about everything in the program and it will yield some sort of description/tutorial for it's function. Basically, right click on everything you can see that has words or icons in the game window. Most of it will give you a description. Easier than looking up **** in the tutorial. Saves time and it knows exactly what you're looking for.

It's how I learned. That and trial and error.
