Re: Unofficially Official What are you Playing

I beat Persona 4 (with the True Ending) this past week, and I'm not sure what game I should pick up next. I'm thinking maybe Valkyria Chronicles.

Re: Unofficially Official What are you Playing

Spent most of my day playing Fallout 3, getting some achievements for quests.

The Nuka Cola Challenge has got to be the most annoying quest I ever played. Even with a guide, getting past certain enemies was a pain in the ass for only 1 bottle of nuka cola quantum. I did find the nuka cola truck, though, and got the last 5 bottles I needed. I ended up killing the girl who gave me that quest after it was done cuz I hated it so much.

          Deathclaws are ****ing mean!
For some reason I only see these things as my evil character. I didn't think they worked like other specific groups going after good or evil characters.

But then I gained a few levels, maxed out my Sneak skill, combined with my chinese stealth suit and silent running perk, and I can easily sneak up to anything for critical hits without anyone knowing where I'm at even if I'm directly in front of them still running around. It becomes really neat to see feral ghouls, deathclaws, ect up close.

I tried to get into Fallout 3, then the steamroller known as Persona 4 just crushed everything else in my life.

I haven't touched Fallout 3 since January but looking at some of the mods out is giving me second thoughts. Some of these mods really are common sense like the "realism" mod which lets you sleep in a house after killing the inhabitants and using related junk (clothing, glue, and fabric to repair clothing and leather and steel junk to repair metal items etc.) to repair items.

I've been in denial for so long but Bethesda really relies on their fans to make the game for them. It's almost like a marketing ploy.

"Check out this awesome new game which sucks out of the box but with dedication by players like you it can be AWSUM!"

"console players need not apply you guys can only get the mediocre product lol"

Yeah, but you're neglecting to take into account all the internet gaming sites that proclaim that user-generated content is the wave of the future. Maybe with Morrowind, then Oblivion, and now Fallout 3, Bethesda is proving themselves to be at the forefront of this monumental paradigm shift in video gaming!

I'm collecting all 1001 light seeds in Prince of Persia because I want those trophies and I'm obsessive compulsive.

God dammit. Do not buy this game, do yourself a favor and get Sands of Time instead. I really, really did not like this game. Yet I'm going to finish collecting these completely irrelevant orbs of light because I can't stop myself.

Getting back to a FFXII game I started back in the fall, I'm trying to learn the most efficient or smoothest ways to get through the game. There's so many side areas and quests that it can get easy to bounce all over the map aimlessly and waste time.

Been playing Phantasy Star III on the PS2 Genesis collection after finishing the other two. The storyline for the game isn't bad, but the game itself is old school obnoxious in some of the worst ways. Like dungeons that kind of make you spiral around the whole level to increase encounters. The worst was the town that was split in the middle by a castle, and then the castle itself was designed as a freakin' maze and had a monster-filled dungeon that made no sense and needed to be traversed to get through the castle.

There's several games where I finished the main story but haven't finished post-game content and the like.

Re: Unofficially Official What are you Playing

I find myself unable to enjoy any game for more than an hour or two. Its really depressing actually. Its been getting worse over the course of two or three years.

The only thing that brings me joy any more is watching a good movie, reading a good book, and my girlfriend. Its really great when I can combine the first and third.

Actually, I got pretty excited when I built my first implementation of the ObjectOutputStream and ObjectInputStream functions in Java in anticipation of using them to create my own games the hard-way. So programming can make me happy I guess.

Wow... talk about a tangent huh? I played some Oblivion today, but got bored after awhile and quit when I died during the fight for Kvatch (when you are fighting you're way to find the Count after closing the Oblivion Gate).

I play Morrowind once in a while. I enjoy the atmosphere of the game more than Oblivion.

I played Medal of Honor: Allied Assault a little bit earlier this week and probably will play some as the days roll on. I really should play Crisis Core and Star Ocean: Second Evolution and justify buying my PSP...

I'm the same way, Smarticus, in terms of not being able to enjoy a game for more than an hour or so, but I'm even worse off, as I really do not watch movies anymore, nor read books, nor have a girlfriend presently.

How did my life get so skewed, where things that were formerly enjoyable (reading, watching movies, watching anime and TV show box sets, playing the vidya) seem almost chore-like lately?

My gaming nowadays comes almost exclusively via my handhelds on the bus trip to work. Even Ogre Battle, one of my favorite games of all time, in my favorite of all video game series, has failed to hold my interest after I recently downloaded via the virtual console and played only the first two maps/levels. Each one just takes so damn long. It's extremely fulfilling to battle and slowly watch your army progress from basic peons to the mind-numbing array of available unit types, which is exactly the same reason I loved FFTA, but the battles required to do so just seem to take longer than I currently wish to invest into them.

The only real console stuff I play anymore are the PSN games that I can play for a short time and still feel fulfilled (Everyday Shooter, flower, etc). And barely the only handheld game I play anymore is Etrian Odyssey, as I am still getting my deep character customization using multiple characters, but am able to do so in bite-sized chunks if I choose to do so.

My old genre of choice, ever since the original Ogre Battle on the SNES, up until about the time of FFTA, was SRPGs. With the imminent arrival of Class of Heroes and The Dark Spire, my attentions seem to be squarely focused on quick (in the short term) but extremely lengthy (in the long term) level grinders, with minimal storyline, but extensive customizability.

Maybe in the old days, I subconsciously chose SRPGs, as I always thought of myself as fairly intellectual, and strategic RPGs fulfilled my twin needs to flex my strategic gray matter, and have complete control over every aspect of my life.

Maybe in the present, I subconsciously choose sometimes brutally difficult level grinders without much of a story, as they are representative of my current circumstances; (sometimes) mindless and (sometimes) almost pointless and repetitive running in a hamster wheel, over and over again, making small improvements along the way, in the hopes that all this time I'm taking (read: wasting) will result in something worthwhile in the end.

Life philosophy via gaming. Gotta love it!

The smoothest and easiest way to beat FFXII is to bounce around areas and waste time. You'll be stupidly underleveled if you don't.

                            I just have one question.

Everyone always complained that Final Fantasy games were too easy (not anyone at this site in particular- remember, I am at GameFAQs too). Now everyone says they are underleveled if they don't fight a lot of battles.

I thought that was to make it challenging? So, unless there is no challenge then you HAVE to fight hundreds of enemies? Maybe it's because I haven't played FFXII that much, or that my brother beat in less time than any other FF he has played. *shrug*

                              Phew. Did some vidya today!

Played a chunk of Chrono Trigger DS. Repaired the Masamune and up to Magus' Keep!

Nailed some invaders in Space Invaders Extreme. Started Revenge of the King in Kirby Super Star Ultra.

And got my first perfect in an online SF4 match. And got the 200 fights trophy. HUZZAH.

Trying to add challenge to a level based RPG is difficult because the gap in levels is what primarily makes up the difficulty, not intelligent strategies or smart thinking. No matter what, a level 5 character will always get their ass beaten by a level 10 character because they're lacking that huge gap in levels (I'm speaking generally here, not particularly about FF12).

FF12 had a really decent battle system because you actually had to make use of your spells and items (casting status spells like berserk, drain, bio and stuff actually had its uses) but it was still plagued by all of the dumb traditional RPG rules that enforce heavy grinding.

Particularly boss monsters which is something I'd wish RPG's would stray away from. Etrian Odyssey had "tough" monsters, but they were still susceptible to all of your attacks at a certain degree. RPG's will include these story monsters that are resistant to EVERYTHING except melee and generic attack magic.

I hate going up against boss creatures and "ooops" resistant to poison/confusion/berserk/death/petrification/drain/shot-in-the-balls/bad breath/critical hits/rejection/all of your useful spells. It takes the idea of good strategy and thinking and tosses it out the window.
