Re: Unofficially Official What are you Playing

I've been busy defending a whale in Phoenix Wright. I also play the tournaments on Mario Golf World Tour. I am glad that I can see how my friends scored on the tournaments as well (even though I only have 1 friend playing them). My goal is to get into the top 10 at least once, which I know I'm capable of doing.

I am back into Minecraft again. It's the new addiction I haven't been able to shake.

Its actually really fun and interesting, I love asymmetrical multiplayer games. It reminds me of the 360 Shadowrun, which were it not for being called Shadowrun would be remembered as an awesome and unique multiplayer game. Its still buggy (closed beta stage), and I'm not really sure how the free to play structure works but I'm gonna keep playing it.

But since its not a drawn out single player game with moe girls or whatever the pav'll just make fun of this post.
You make PLENTY of fun of the games I like so I don't think I'll stoop to your level~

I think I will pick up Transistor today. I read a few reviews, and I was intrigued (I've been intrigued since it was first announced), but the clincher was what the Eurogamer review said...that when you die, the penalty is not starting a level over or returning to a checkpoint (ala every game ever), or permadeath (roguelikes, etc) or losing items or currency (the Souls series); instead, the penalty is to lock down your most-used ability/skill (in the game's parlance, function) for a time to force you to think outside of the box and discover other functions that you may have overlooked prior. I think this is brilliant. It's not as harsh a penalty as a roguelike or the Souls games, but nor is it hand-hold-y like death in most games. This might just hit the sweet spot, and it is exactly what just sold me on the game.

That sounds pretty damned neat. I wonder how the execution of it will play out. For instance, are there times when "only this ability/skill" will work and you can't continue until the timer or whatever runs down?

Re: Unofficially Official What are you Playing

I don't think the slight puzzle-esque aspects rely on any one function. I also love that every function can be used either as an adjunct to another equipped (active) function, or can be used as a passive buff. So every function you obtain ultimately has three differing uses/functions.

And that's not even getting into the "turn-based" aspect of the game, which IS a bit more puzzle-based...you can slow down time, plot out your moves (ala XCOM) and unleash them. This aspect, plus the entire way the functions work, makes this sound like a playground for experimentation. It sounds f***ing brilliant.

I'm calling fibber on that! I wanna see the receipts.

It did look and play really well at PAX East, but yeah, limited demo.

Got it last night, plays well, runs fine (though there is a LOT of screen tearing for me). I really like all the options the system gives you, its kind of like parasite eve but not realllllly? The battle system is cool.

I'm not very into the narrative so far, the sword sounds extremely needy (probably intentional) and chimes in about evvvveerrryyyything.

I was talking to a friend of mine last night about the music, as we're in the preliminary stages of writing for a game project as well. I said I found that the soundtrack was appropriate for the setting but it wasn't really for the gameplay, I dunno, we've been having a lot of discussions about fully scored songs versus loops etc for a while now, he liked the soundtrack a lot so there's that. I do too! It's just, I dunno, obvious?

Sorry, that's a lot of ranting for a game I really like and supported DAY ONE~

Man, I'm starting to get really disinterested in GTA IV's story. All I've been doing is chasing down a target and killing him. And this mission format seems to be the same for every character I come across. I do enjoy having shootouts in the middle of the street or in the corridors of buildings; it feels real and appropriate for a crime-themed game like GTA. But at this point I'm just waiting for the third act to kick in. I now have a bigger appreciation for GTA V and the reparations it gave to the series.

Isn't this the way every GTA game plays?

Also, this is the reason I do not play GTA games.

I don't know.. I don't really find Transistors combat to be all that fun. And I was all about Bastions combat.

If you didn't like Bastion, is there a chance you'll like Transistor?

I personally did not dislike Bastion...I just did not give it the chance I prolly should have.

At some point I started to hate sandbox games. Zelda is about the most sandbox-type game I can stand.
