Re: Your Favorite Vidya Gaem Tunes
Ending Theme Zelda: A Link to the Past
Quite the reward for a budding gamer to listen to after an epic quest. I'd defeat Ganon over and over just to listen to this. Starts off really happy with the rejuvenation of the kingdom then turns into a beautiful lullaby where the main theme slowly kicks in and history is made. ****in' fantastic. Zelda music wouldn't sound this good again until Twilight Princess.
I Want You to Know Super Puzzle Fighter II
Yes. Sugary J-pop from an extra-sugary, extra-great game. If Sakura's in a game, I will play as her. This is fun and spritely and carefree even the though vocals are amateurish. JUST LIKE SAKURA KASUGANO :V
Beyond the Bounds ZOE2
What a weird, cool, fast song. Kojima's expertly edited trailer for the game turned me onto it and it was used pretty ****in' well in the game too with all sorts of reprises and variations. Sure it's filled with non-sensical gibberish (and some English) and isn't exactly gonna go well in a crowd but this is exactly the kind of song giant robots should duke it out to. Besides this anyway.
Theme from Star Fox Star Fox SNES
**** YEEARRR. Thank Grodd Brawl rescued the SNES game's awesome music from the depths of memory. Another tune I'd beat the game for, I got to hear this performed live at some local concert. AND I FELL IN LOVE ALL OVER AGAAIIINNN. This song epitomizes VICTOLY. Now if only Nintendo would rescue this series from the gutter it's buried in.
Gusty Garden Galaxy Super Mario Galaxy
When I first heard this I had to stop for a second and make sure my ears were working correctly. Good Egg Galaxy's theme was nice and all, and the return of the Airship tune from SMB3 was ****ing awesome but Gusty Garden is so triumphant, so heroic, so MARIO, it almost makes the character seem fresh again. It's just stunning this is music from a video game. Here it is played live in the recording studio. Hopefully amazing orchestrated music like this will be the standard in Nintendo games from now on. Y'know, if they ever decide to make them again. :V
To Far Away Times Chrono Trigger
Another ending tune I'd beat the game over and over for, until a year later when the Internets made awful MIDIs available for all to enjoy. But the MIDIs wouldn't be enough so I'd still have to beat the game over and over again anyway. Not that I mind because this is classic, classic videro gaem music that ought to make Yasunori Mitsuda cry tears of Beethoven proportions for his success.
Concrete Man Mega Man 9
A video game music list feels weird without 8-bit music or Mega Man music, so here ya go. The best 8-bit Mega Man game. Arguable of course but eminently hummable nonetheless.
Parasite Eve Main Theme Parasite Eve
There's already been some Yoko Shimomura love and yes, it's a crying shame she's stuck doing Kingdom Hearts ****. I was half-tempted to put her orchestrated Simple & Clean here, but her FIRST big break is this huge piano/orchestra theme for Parasite Eve, that so-called cinematic RPG. This definitely sounds like a piece from a cinematic soundtrack with lots of peaks (STRIIINGS) and valleys (quiet piano) and weird bits (dripping water?). Women named Yoko sure know how to do the musics. The dudes at Square should listen to this as they **** up the sequel.
Dracula's Castle SotN
Not enough Castlevania on these lists. It's too bad the best track in Symphony of the Night is in the first area of the castle. I'd return to it just to listen to this music, slashing wolves and zombies all the while. Next to Vampire Killer and Tears of Blood, this track gets the Castlevania feel down peeerrfeeectly. The way it opens up, the guitar coming in, building up, drums, KICKASS MELODY. Listen to it and just try to get Alucard's walking animation out of your head.
Eternity Memory of Lightwaves FFX-2
An obvious spin on the preludes and prologues and To Zanarkand's the series is known for I was surprised to find FFX-2, hyped as some campy girl-powered romp (which uh it is), open with this thoughtful, nostalgic-sounding tune. Like, this is Yuna's scrapbook music or something. But I think it's pretty damn elegant, the way it starts off with a repetitive piano, then layered with strings and other gossamer sounds to climax into a big euphoric payoff. Or maybe I'm a Japanese girl.

Or maybe I'm a lion. (Honorable mention. Yes, I am allowing one rule-breaking entry as per DK's precedent)
FF8 has an awesome soundtrack. Eyes on Me, Man With the Machine Gun, The Oath, Don't Be Afraid, The Extreme, all fairly obvious choices. All awesome choices. But let's go with the bonkers rock fight song. Sounds more like Gitaroo Man than Final Fantasy and the drumming reminds me of Battlestar. Awesome, weird, rocking boss music.
These songs were on my list but had to be replaced for freshness' sake.
Snake Eater Metal Gear Solid 3
Cornered/Objection! - Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney
Staff Roll Vagrant Story
Small Two of Pieces Xenogears
