I usually hate rap, but the inclusion of rap in their songs is what really makes some of them good. Besides what they use always sounds more like 80s hiphop to me than modern rap. Old hiphop was some good stuff.
Thought the first album was decent, but was not nearly as good as Deltron's 3030 album (it's pretty much 3/4 of the first Gorillaz album anyway, member-wise), and never ventured any further into their discography than that.
I'd consider Demon Days better than the first. It gets bonus points for including Dennis Hopper reading a story and for having El Manana, which is one of the best songs I've ever heard.

The more I listen to Deltron 3030, I think less and less of it. The beats are dull and I know Del could have taken more advantage of the the concept as a whole.
Gorillaz debut is I think leagues above either Demon Days or Plastic Beach. I can totally see how someone could prefer Demon Days though. Demon Days is a way more focused album. However, I think Plastic Beach delves a little too deep into rap, and despite that, manages to completely underuse Snoop on the opening track. Also, all the Damon only tracks are sooo dreary and melancholy, nothing like Rehash, 5/4, or M1A1 to really get moving to.
