    OnLive

A new game streaming service presented at GDC.

Long story short you're not really playing the game on your computer, you're playing it on their servers and the video is being streamed back to you supposedly lag-free. So with any PC or Mac than can run OnLive (or the "micro-console") and a good broadband connection you can play games regardless of system reqs. If this works as advertised it should be quite awesome.

I can't imagine this running lag free. At least not as well as they say.

A good idea but Blizzard and Valve servers are easily get bogged down by lag. I want to know what kind of space age servers they're using to claim a lag free experience.

Well if it works as well as they say it will, I can see it being a big deal. I can imagine it replacing most other ways of playing games. They make it sound very accessible and if they make it cheap I would definitely try it out.

Here is the official site looks like something is happening in 8 hours... Beta? It might just be the site that is launching.

            Re: OnLive

I hope it doesn't catch on because then you'll have content controlling whores like Epic games who believe that when you buy a game you aren't paying for the physical copy but the license to use it.

I can see it now: Pay 30$ to play OUR game on OUR server or pay 60$ for a physical copy that you still must register on our server to play and reregister every twenty four hours after.

I came up with this idea 7+ years ago.

That man did say they had been working on this for more than 7 years. WHAT ARE YOU HIDING?

I hadn't thought about it until Marcus and Gloom said it, but I agree with them. I'm not endorsing this anymore.

PC piracy has gotten really, really bad (look at World of Goo or any other small-time but quality product that people didn't feel the need to pay for). Different companies (mainly EA) are trying more aggressive strategies as a natural business response.

Remember when everybody hated Steam? But check em now. I think the only way they could have done so well was by offering the most complete ownership you can have without an actual physical product. And so companies like EA and Ubisoft have offered their games for download as well.

tl;dr not everyone in the biz has evil plans for distributed downloads.

                    Re: OnLive

Valve doesn't believe in DRM but guys like EA and Atari have stupid stuff like "you can only install this on three machines" and periodic internet checks to make sure you're using a legit copy.

And no program, emphasis on the no, is crack proof. If it exists, there is a crack. There's no point in punishing the people who actually pay for the product because a bunch of dudes who weren't going to buy it in the first place pirate it.

I like the idea, but I am extremely skeptical it'll work as advertised.

I know that software really cannot be made crack proof, but it really isn't going to stop EA and the lot from trying to anyway. It's a DRM arms race!

Core gamers don't like DRM, and who blames em. I just think there's a greater chance that big companies will eventually give a little and compromise, i.e. the Steam route.

Something like this is certainly the wave of the future, but that fact that they're a pioneer in unknown territory makes me think there's no chance this will be as good as the guy is making it out to be.

I think it's a really good idea. I'd like to play some of the new PC titles, without upgrading. Such as Diablo 3.

I don't know, if this works as advertised, I think alot of the console competitors have something to worry about.
