As much as we would like to think we have democracy, we don't. We technically have a republic - aka an indirect democracy. One where we elect people that share our views to make decisions for us.
Now back in the day, this made sense. Our country was growing and communication and media were primitive. Also technology was just as bad. People representing us was the most logical way to efficiently get things done; however, this is not the case today.
And how often is there a political candidate that shares your views exactly on everything. Most times, you only get two choices... not much to your benefit.
I propose a new system. A TRUE democracy, which is completely feasible due to the times we now live in. We should get rid of the Congress. Each and every citizen of the United States should be a member of the new Congress. We could even vote through the internet eventually.
We should have every single vote publicly posted, but not necessarily with our names. We would have it optional to put either our name or a reference number. Then we can check the Government website and see exactly every single vote and that it's been accounted for properly.
We could have annual, semi-annual, and quarterly voting times every year. Certain types of issues could only appear at certain times over certain intervals. For example if we voted to change the speed limit, we might have to wait a year until we are able to vote changing it again.
All votes would have 4 options, For - Against - Impartial - Representative.
Impartial means, you haven't taken a stance, and representative allows you to choose someone else to represent you on this issue.
There would be divisions for voting and let's say you know nothing about the legal system, you could have your cousin who's a lawyer represent all your votes under the Legal category. While you could still vote yourself under Health Care, Local, Trade etc...
Politics would change FROM big businesses bribing candidates to get what they want INTO a true democracy where each American can decide what's best and the focus of politics will be on Information and getting people to be informed and care.
Of course the only problem is that big business would never allow this to happen. They love having control over our country. Whether we like it or not, they are the ones making decisions.
I'm curious as to what some of you think about this...
