    Ewe Republic...

As much as we would like to think we have democracy, we don't. We technically have a republic - aka an indirect democracy. One where we elect people that share our views to make decisions for us.

Now back in the day, this made sense. Our country was growing and communication and media were primitive. Also technology was just as bad. People representing us was the most logical way to efficiently get things done; however, this is not the case today.

And how often is there a political candidate that shares your views exactly on everything. Most times, you only get two choices... not much to your benefit.

I propose a new system. A TRUE democracy, which is completely feasible due to the times we now live in. We should get rid of the Congress. Each and every citizen of the United States should be a member of the new Congress. We could even vote through the internet eventually.

We should have every single vote publicly posted, but not necessarily with our names. We would have it optional to put either our name or a reference number. Then we can check the Government website and see exactly every single vote and that it's been accounted for properly.

We could have annual, semi-annual, and quarterly voting times every year. Certain types of issues could only appear at certain times over certain intervals. For example if we voted to change the speed limit, we might have to wait a year until we are able to vote changing it again.

All votes would have 4 options, For - Against - Impartial - Representative.

Impartial means, you haven't taken a stance, and representative allows you to choose someone else to represent you on this issue.

There would be divisions for voting and let's say you know nothing about the legal system, you could have your cousin who's a lawyer represent all your votes under the Legal category. While you could still vote yourself under Health Care, Local, Trade etc...

Politics would change FROM big businesses bribing candidates to get what they want INTO a true democracy where each American can decide what's best and the focus of politics will be on Information and getting people to be informed and care.

Of course the only problem is that big business would never allow this to happen. They love having control over our country. Whether we like it or not, they are the ones making decisions.

I'm curious as to what some of you think about this...

no thanks. those people in congress are not just a random figure head, they are people who know the system intimately becuase its their job to know it. more so they are experts in their field with knowledge that the average person does not know.

you may think they are irrelevant, but to the contrary they are quite important to the American system and style of governance. you dont seam to understand the importance of politics itself and see the system as only a corrupt entity.

we elect them not because we cannot communicate our voice, but because we trust they will use our desires with their knowledge and influence to make a vote that would be in our favor. if we feel they do not meet this then we vote for another in the following election.

also note that if you dont like the candidates that run you can choose to abstain your ballot or even run yourself. anyone can be on the congress seat, you just need to win your state thingy. of course a single person getting the majority of the vote is not very likely but the choice is still there, and a strong enough platform can do wonders.

so no thanks to your suggestion. if anything, people need to take a bigger interest in their goverment. our voice has power, but only if we use it in the right manors to bring change.

Thank you Ωbright for the sig fix!

Yep. Our system is flawed. The idea of a true democracy isn't old.

If I could pop onto my computer screen,
be asked if we should legalize gay marriage,
                click yes,
be asked if we should illegalize abortion,
                click yes,
wait a week for the results,
and see where we stand as a country and have it changed,
                ----
I think a lot of people would do that.

But the people in power wouldn't accept this. They make too much money with the current form of government. Even if the people decided that things were going to change and to overturn the current government, they aren't going to step down quitely.

So you essentially want our government to be run like the yearly GameFAQs character battles.
