I mean actual 3D gameplay not 2D gameplay with sidestepping. They put more and more effort into the character models, animations, lighting, etc. but almost all of them are the same old two fighters facing each other on opposite sides of the screen gameplay. Where's the fighting games where you actually move freely in the 3D environment? The closest I can think of are wrestling games but they're pretty boring if you don't care for the "sport." A better example would be the versus mode of MK Shaolin Monks. I'd love for that to be developed into a full game.

Re: Why aren't there more 3D fighting games?
There's more room for controlled technique in a 2D fighter. It's easier to tweak also.
When it comes to full 3D roaming fighters, things get overly complicated, that's why there hasn't been an established series with depth.
While MK Shaolin Monks was a game with a decent fighting engine, what do you think can be done to add depth that makes it appeal to fighting fans, since the casuals are ruled out?Quote of the moment - "When you cut down a tree, don't stand near it."

Because CAMERA ANGLES, that's why. Also, I'm sure developers are spooked by previous examples of 3D fighting games (Eirgheiz, Bushido Blade). I guess it's not surprising that all these examples come from Square, a game that is not predominantly KNOWN for their fighting games. I guess Namco and Tecmo and Capcom have all resigned to the fact that the idea just doesn't work so hot.
The closest we've gotten is, in fact, Power Stone, and that was not a very deep game. Especially not for FIGHTAN GAEM enthusiasts.
Someday, maybe, they'll try again, and we'll be able to fight like real, instead of on a single plane that rotates when someone steps forward or backwards.
