    Earthbound-style encounters

Do want encounters in a town or want a different type of encounter for dungeons? Try this. Create 5 (or more) animal-type characters and name them monster1-5 (I like the werewolves, myself) set their movement to ''random". In their event codes, place a battle (or character battle, if you want). afterward (If you beat the battle), set up event codes for the 5 monsters like this"

M1: display on M2, display on M5, display off M1
M2: display on M3, display on M1, display off M2

you get the idea, right? This way, you can have a different type of encounter. Throw in some value cond. branches and you could have "random" encounters.

I still coan't find a way to place movable "encounters" on the world map. I'll tall yo how when(or if) I figure it out.

I think your party can just navigate around the encounters then and never have to fight if they don't want to.

Unfortunately, the NPC behavior is way too buggy for this to work well. A lot of the time, I think you end up with "encounters" that stand there and wait for you to run up to them.

I assume you have tried this yourself--could you tell us about how well the NPCs performed as viable "moving encounters," and whether certain layouts or situations made them act more or less reliably?

This does, however, get me thinking about good ways to execute some stuff similar to the puzzles I liked in Tales of the Abyss...

        Exactly! Just like Earthbound!

also, I had my NPCs walk foward-back. THis made the feeling that they were "alive"

But in Earthbound the enemies chased you on sight, and they were crazy fast.

Its a good idea, especially if you can address the issues brought up by Wave.
