If we heard back from agetec and they didn't say "don't do it" then it would be a higher priority, but there is no point in putting tons of work into it if we never hear back from them.

Use MadEdit, and set the character encoding for Shift-JIS. That will let you see the Japanese text. Also make sure that what you are copy/pasting actually is Japanese text and not just a string of special code/control characters.
No, it's not terribly easy and there is a steep learning curve. You just have to experiment and try things out, and if you keep at it, you'll eventually understand how things work. Always make backups of your disc image in case you make a mistake. I've posted other info throughout this thread that could be helpful.
Reading a lot also helps - google "PlayStation game translation" and take a look at some of the stuff that comes up. It's all technical, and may be a bit hard to understand at first - especially if you don't have a background in programming or working with binary/hex, etc.
