Which is why Kupid 2.0 is my current focus.

If we heard back from agetec and they didn't say "don't do it" then it would be a higher priority, but there is no point in putting tons of work into it if we never hear back from them.

It will probably be longer than just a few days. I've got lots of work to do. Also, see above.

I know it's not the hex that I'm pasting, it's just things like Ubju8 and Ka bb.

    Any idea what's going on?
Use MadEdit, and set the character encoding for Shift-JIS. That will let you see the Japanese text. Also make sure that what you are copy/pasting actually is Japanese text and not just a string of special code/control characters.

No, it's not terribly easy and there is a steep learning curve. You just have to experiment and try things out, and if you keep at it, you'll eventually understand how things work. Always make backups of your disc image in case you make a mistake. I've posted other info throughout this thread that could be helpful.

Reading a lot also helps - google "PlayStation game translation" and take a look at some of the stuff that comes up. It's all technical, and may be a bit hard to understand at first - especially if you don't have a background in programming or working with binary/hex, etc.

      Thanks, that's actually really helpful.

      EDIT:
Just for the record though, I'm only doing this for practice.
I'm starting to edit the menu, but i can't find where it is.
I did a quick search for 魔法 and it found 53 results inside other strings of text.
Choosing which one out of all the "magics" is the one on the main menu is my real problem. can you just tell me which line the main edit menu starts on? I want to work screen by screen until it's finished, you know, if agetec says you can't release it, i want something for myself at least.

          Sorry, didn't notice the edit.

I can't tell you exactly what line the main editor menu is on, as I believe that it is spread out over a few locations. In general, the text that appears in the source file is ordered screen by screen, but some parts are mixed and matched, some parts are duplicates (i.e. all the different memory card interface screens each have their own text entry, very far apart from each other, even though the text is just saying the same exact things over and over again).

My recommendation is to just start from the very top of the file and work your way down. Trying to do it screen by screen would be a major pain.

Also remember to test frequently and make backups. If you make a slight mistake, it can prevent the game image from running and it's impossible to figure out exactly which edit you made that's causing the problem.

I'm taking a break from the translation for the time being. And will be focusing on the video overview series.

I got a second (or was it third?) promotion last Thursday, and now I have even more work to do. Plus I started going back to college (part time), which sucks up time too.

So it's going to be a while before I'm going to start really working on this again. And I'd like to avoid doing more work on it as agetec may say no, and I have plenty of other things to be doing.

Hi there! I'm new here, but was very excited when I find out that someone was trying to translate rpg tsukuru 4, even though english is not my original language, but its much better for me to understand than japanese.... anyway I would like to help somehow, did you know that the site gamefaqs.com has the translation of some of the options of the game? I don't know if this will help you but, anyway..... I also know a little, very little of japanese, so I can try to help some more, ok?

localization plans are on hold, since we never heard back from agetec on if it would be okay with them.

                      Re: Localizing RPG Tsukuru 4

Chances are, if Agetec didn't respond, it's their way of saying no.

To be honest, translating games, or modifying them is actually illegal. So, I doubt that we'll ever really get to use RPG Tsukuru 4 unless if we rely on some translation FAQ from the Internet or something.

Besides, I kind of doubt Agetec is going to care much about a game that's 10 years old.

But, if they allow you to do it, Thutmose, then miracles never cease!

I think this is a worthwhile reason to give this topic a bump.

                        "Let's Translate Rappin' MAGIC"

                        1 - Game Opening

                        2 - Town
                        3 - Castle
4 - Forest (this is where the battle system comes into play)
                        5 - Return to Town
                        6 - Return to Forest
                        7 - Final Boss

I do believe this is the first time RPGT4's sample game has been recorded, too.

If I manage to get it together, I'll try posting the second episode of my look at RPGT4. There is a lot of stuff I had translated back in July that no one has ever seen before, so it should be interesting.

Even if you're unable to release a patch, seeing a bunch of translated screencaps would still be quite useful for those of us using RPGT4. A lot easier to look up than a simple text translation guide.

Of course, it's ultimately up to you. Don't want you to feel ultra-drained again.

                                Yeah.

The thing is, especially in the scripting/event screens, I can only fit so much text. Even if I fully understand what the Japanese is saying, it is impossible for me to fit a full translation in that small space. Japanese is a lot more compact than English. So, imo, it's not really possible to do a full translation. Ideally, there would be a brief description in these areas, and then a reference to a section in a FAQ/manual which gives a full translation and explanation.

Just the map names alone are a nightmare. "Castle" becomes "Cstl". >_<

Sadly, I have forgotten a lot of the translations these past few months. So I'd need to do a lot of re-translating and experimentation. I'll need to take better notes next time. :P
