    Localizing RPG Tsukuru 4

    Well, looky what I have:

I just got my copy today. I have to get tons of work done for a presentation I'm giving tomorrow at my new place of work. But as soon as I am able, I will get started experimenting and testing out my ideas. Being as I've never done anything remotely like this before, there is a lot to learn.

For the time being, until we hear back from agetec, this will just be a personal project to see if I am capable of, and if the game will allow, the translation of the software's text into English.

If we get the go-ahead from agetec, and my experiments prove fruitful, then I will start looking for people to help me out with the actual translation and we can go from there.

I will post regular updates on my progress as things move along.

Just don't get too ambitious and start planning too many projects at once. Too many people have tried making multiple games, and failed to make anything.

EDIT: No longer necessary. Please ignore request.

Special request to anyone who has RPGT4 - please attempt to make an ISO image file of the disc (you could use MagicISO to make the image) and let me know if you are able to (i.e. no errors).

Further - With the disc in your drive, go to MOVIE2>SUMMON2> And try to copy any of the .STR files to your computer hard-drive (i.e. try to copy/paste "S_17.STR" to your desktop).

If you are unable to do any of the above because of error messages or a "Copying File" dialog that hangs indefinitely, please let me know.

EDIT: No longer necessary. Please ignore request.

You read Japanese, too?! Are you even human?
Oh my god! You are so beautiful.
I had no idea how beautiful you were.

lol Nah. I'd need other people to help me with the Japanese.

I can sort of read ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs, though. :P

                Well, looky what I have:

My first translation tests have been successful. Obviously there are some problems with overlapping, but that's mainly because this was quick-n-dirty, and I didn't take much time to make sure things fit.

There are also some spacing issues (namely that the spacing between characters, kerning, was designed for the larger Japanese font, which makes the English characters have a lot of space between them). If I can figure out which part of the program controls character spacing, then it may be possible to modify the spacing, bringing the characters closer together.

My verdict: Translating RPG Tsukuru 4 would take quite a lot of work, but it is definitely doable. If I had some people willing to look at long lists of Japanese words & sentences, and send translations back to me, then I think that this can be done over the course of several months.

But, being as we haven't heard back from agetec yet, I can't get started taking this project full-scale. So.... we wait. And I'll probably continue experimenting. And definitely work on Kupid 2.0.

Maybe in the mean time I'll write up some articles or something that feature the various graphics, movies, animations, etc. to show everyone how awesome RPGT4 is. Any ideas/suggestions for stuff you'd like to see? Sort of like a 2.0 version of the really cool three part article series that Valk wrote?

                Seriously. We need RPGT4.

impressive! If you want to do your own RPGT4 feature, that'd be cool. would definitely be well recieved.

I'm thinking of doing a video series that goes over various parts of the software, looks at the summon movies, the music, the graphics, with commentary from me.

                    I'll figure something out.

I'd definately like to make an effort to translate the sample game. I'd just need a text file of its data.

Just FYI to everyone else - I sent Dray a RAM dump of the sample game, so he can work on it.

But, I have discovered through experimentation, that the text in the sample game is compressed. This means that it will not be possible for me to translate the sample game.

The RAM dump I sent Dray, though, was uncompressed. So he is able to translate the text using that. But it's not feasible to put the English translations back into the game.

Wow, I love that screenshot! It is very cool to see this (even partially) in English already. Nice job, man.

It's really disappointing to me that I'd need an emulator to work this, with the region lockout and all. I really like playing this kind of stuff on my PlayStation, and I would have been willing to buy the Japanese game if it could be patched into English on my PS3 or something.

At any rate, I think I can help with the translations, especially the non-kanji ones. The katakana are especially easy: I can tell you a few of the translations on that screenshot, for example.

                          First heading: System Data

Item under Monster Map: I don't know. It roughly sounds like "Taitol" or "Taitoru" and it's some kind of English or non-Japanese word. Possibly "total"? EDIT: On second look I think it's "title".

                          Second heading: Scenario Data

                          Item under Scenario Data: Event

Item to the right of Event: The first half reads "Scenario"; the second half is in kanji so I can't translate it easily.

Third heading: Data (second half in kanji). Perhaps Data Management.

Item under the third heading: Memory Card

Select button item: Either Editor (second half in kanji) or Edit (second half in kanji). I'm heavily leaning toward Editor.

                          Triangle button item: Test Play

Do you think maybe Enterbrain or Agetec would be willing to send you an uncompressed text version of it? It seems like they would be able to do so fairly easily.

Not necessary. The memory dump that Thutmose sent me as all the text I need, and I will be able to make it playble. It'd just have to be a separate downloadable game, like every other game in the community.

Or tiles. It is the map editor.

If I had to guess (I didn't go into it much), it's where you name your scenario data and stuff.

Third heading: Data (second half in kanji). Perhaps Data Management.
Indeed it is. It's where the game is saved, as well as where you import graphics and music (neither of which, I don't think we'll be able to do).

Select button item: Either Editor (second half in kanji) or Edit (second half in kanji). I'm heavily leaning toward Editor.
It's where you find the option to change things like the editor BGM.

By the way, I beat Rappin' MAGIC. And I haven't even translated anything, yet.

Speaking of translation, Thutmose has the easy part. Some of the editor names were in the memory dump, and a quick translation of those showed that the literal translations are pretty darn clear (like "Not enough blocks on card"). At least using Google Translations.

Meanwhile, a glance at translations of the sample game... I'm going to REALLY be guessing at the context of some of these.
