    Remember PSU guys?

(for those who don't know, I'm talking about Phantasy Star Universe)

I thought that game(while repetitive as all hell) was fun. You could easily hook up with folks, and get to mauling some aliens. Best part was, it was easily accessible -- no struggling through the low levels getting killed 90% of the time(FFXI), or the dread of "knowing your role and shutting your mouth"(most MMORPGS, most notably FFXI), you could be/do whatever you wanted, as long as you were of some help to the party. You could even hook up with high level players and reap the benefits if you met the requirements(and knew how to NOT DIE).

I wanted to be a mixed support/damage dealer/look awesome, so I chose the appropriate race/clothes/classes. I was a beast on that game, doing moderate damage(enough for my assistance to matter) AND being a potent healer, I could go through megid-laced levels and stay alive(mostly because I ran around like a chicken, BUT IT WORKS), I knew that game like the back of my armpit hair.

I made a TON of friends too. I got nicknames like "super paladin", "ROBO FORCE" and "white guy who came in with a pea shooter and left with my heart"(true story ). The tension in the air when you fight a huge boss that's 40+ levels stronger than you and/or can kill you in one hit, but you actually have a chance to KILL IT(due to the game going on in real time, suck it square). And the dance parties!

It was hella fun, just because of the social aspect.

Unfortunately, the game was JUST TOO REPETITIVE. And the way extra content was handled(give us a tiny bit of content that was already on the disc, every 2 months), just ticked me off. Bruce's dungeon was a cool mission, but IMO it was too unbalanced, which made it useless for low levelers, and minutely rewarding for high levelers, you were better off facing a SS mission. But anyway...

Who still plays the game? I quit it a long time ago, I wish I hadn't though, I made so many good friends on that thing.

It was stupid for them to keep things locked on the disc and release them as if they were something mind blowing. Also, basically every weapon looked the same, which made having S rank stuff not great compared to C ranked weapons (other than damage).

Also, for an action RPG, it relied too heavily on random stats. I hated that a direct hit could result in 0 damage.

PSU failed to stop me and the InnerCircle from going back to playing FFXI and WoW. And we were all PSO fans.
      ...and that's why.

It's the downfall of doing an MMORPG or any game you plan to do updates for on PS2 without requiring the HDD. You're limited to what's on the disc until you do an expansion. Which then has to be stand-alone so you either hold out on that until the original's sold enough that you're ready to kill it or you shoot your profit margin in the foot. Everquest Online Adventures had the same problems.

I got bored and quit over a year ago.

Although I did enjoy filling people's rooms with space toilets.

how about a Phantasy Star game that isn't a mediocre MMO, Sega?

or would that be like asking for a good sonic game

I was a huge PSO fan. It's the best MMO game I've ever played simply because it's also the only one I've ever played
Wait, no. I played PSU, but I was disappointed by the lack of FOmarl robes! How can I remake my chubby FOmarl without the dress!? She ended up being a chubby Figunner with a horrible fashion sense

Anyway, I stopped playing a long time ago. Didn't even got the expansion. I was looking forward to some of the new features, but the game is indeed to repetitive. What I think made it feel more repetitive that it was is that people where only playing only the spots that gave more job points. Some planets became desolate until a new, better mission appeared.

PSU was horribly disappointing to me. I have no faith in Sega anymore.

They ****ed Sonic, and now they've ****ed Phantasy Star.

                  To repeat:

I thought the game was a ton of fun, I liked the combat and I'm pretty sure they added timed attacks in the expansion like in PSO. As well as PSO clothes and PSO bosses, I'd take a PSO with better graphics!

The game was just too much of a time sink, the added scope of everything made it like if I wanted to play with the inner circle and everyone we'd have to go through a dungeon that took 30 minutes like a bunch of times to do anything. Sometimes you fought a boss, most times, no. There needed to be more bosses I loved fighting the mecha boss a few times but by then everyone was a bajillion levels above me.

It just didn't have the epic feel of PSO, but maybe the expansion and all the game changes that came out change that.

I'd totally give the game another whirl. I'd give it another FOnewearl!

PSO wasn't even a GAME when it first came out. I haven't seen an online game which was just 1/20th of itself.

At least you could get through all of PSO out the box, that wasn't even possible in PSU for a year or so. I hope the expansion did change all that, but by now, even the last major updates for the old game are already up.

I might give it another try now.

Nope, still $9.99 a month but if you are playing on the 360 you can play on a silver account.

I just started playing PSU after the PSO servers went down a bit ago. I thought I would check out pavilion PSU activity since its higher than the mag's. But I take it things have died down here?

Except for DK, I know of no active PSU player in my circle.

Like the topic says, we tried it out for a month or two and got sick of it.
