He's good at jumping and being thrown. I like how his hair projects a bullet-like aura that protects it against being effected by the wind

Re: Final Fantasy XIII-2 all but confirmed

I know I've been running this "turn-based" discussion into the ground today over the span of a few different topics, but I'm gonna say this, and (try) to leave it at that:

I prefer turn-based myself, when it comes to quote unquote traditional JRPGS. Not a fan of the Tales series due to its brawler-like battles. Not a fan of games that take a hack and slash approach to battles and try to shoehorn them into a "traditional" JRPG (the dot hack series).

But to think that you'll ever see another console (as opposed to handheld) release, numbered FF game that's strictly turn-based is pure folly. That's what all the offshoots and side things like FFCC are for...to get back to "tradition," or to experiment with mechanics or gameplay (or even game type) even moreso than the "real" FF games do.

I think my main gripe in this entire thing revolves around this:

(S)he continues to bemoan the lack of turn-based games this gen, and at the same time says that nothing on the DS holds any interest. Now, honestly, I know your tastes tend to be fairly kiddy, Erika, but if as far as you've ventured into the DS is Mario & Luigi 2, and cross your arms and say, "Nothing interests me," then you're really doing something wrong.

I'll make a list for you to make it easy:

        -The Etrian Odyssey series
        -Contact
        -DQIX (I GUESS)
        -The FF remakes
        -SMT: Devil Summoner
-SMT: Devil Survivor (granted, these last two might be a bit mature)
        -The Chrono Trigger port
        -The Etrian Odyssey series
-FF: The 4 Heroes of Light
-To get REALLY old-school, The Dark Spire
        -Oh, and Pokemon (I GUESS)

I think the real issue is that you cannot or will not look past the big mainstream stuff to find what you are looking for. So what if FF no longer makes turn-based games on console? So what if Mario & Luigi supposedly sucks? Expand your horizons a bit. You are making drastic changes in one area of your life....why not take this opportunity to push past the boundaries of your "comfort zone" in gaming, and find stuff that I have full confidence would appeal to you?

Sorry I've been directing all of this at you today, but it seriously kinda irked me how you put the DS down, yet all the types of games you claim to enjoy are having a major renaissance on that same console.

And that's all I care to say on the subject.

So I'm playing through FF6 for the first time and when the **** does this game open up? I've been at it for ten hours and the game keeps changing the team I'm controlling, and it's been railroading me from point a to point b the entire time. When does this game give me full control and let me pick my own team? The game won't even let me use magic yet!

But they could all act at the same time if all their ATB guages were full enough. The ATB guage merely acted as a delay between attacks, not an absolute ruler of turn order.

As for the discussion of the popularity of turn-based RPGs, I think that they're more popular than you and advertisers expect. They just need to be flashy enough and allow the player enough control (both in battle and during exploration) in order to hold people's interest. FF13 did not provide either, and FF12, while you were free to go wherever you wanted, you did not have enough control during battle.

I could say more, but at this point, I'm being speculative, so I guess I'll leave it at that as well.

(S)he continues to bemoan the lack of turn-based games this gen, and at the same time says that nothing on the DS holds any interest. Handheld games don't hold my interest much, anymore. They lack the same "oomph" that console games have. Tiny screen with little speakers, or big screen with big speakers? I'm going with the big screen. Most of my handheld gaming wound up being on the Super Game Boy and the Game Boy Player. Final Fantasy IV is the perfect example of this. It's my absolute favorite FF entry. I've played through the console versions plenty of times. But the Nintendo DS version, with its upped graphics and sound, and seriously more epic cutscenes, I haven't even beaten once!

Along with that, I simply don't pay attention to what's coming out anymore. I'm trying to save money for big things, and I'm trying to get other stuff done as well. This place and the Mag are the only places I hear about new games. Most of the games you listed, I never even heard of. The situation even includes console games. I didn't even know there was a Donkey Kong racing game on the Wii until just recently (the game came out in 2007). It just so happens that more console games are getting into the limelight in these forums, and thus I have a better chance of gaining interest in them. And even then, the games that interest me have to be REALLY attention-grabbing in order for me to be willing to spend the money on them nowadays.

That Final Fantasy Heroes of Light game? While I'm sure the turn-based battles are nice and all, the actual premise of the game doesn't sound big enough to be worth a purchase. It sounds more like Final Fantasy I-2.

I'm sure the Chrono Trigger port is great and all, but I already own the original on SNES, and as I said, handheld ports have yet to provide the same feeling of oomph that playing them on a big TV with big ol' speakers blaring had.

Pokémon has gotten too stale. Every quest is basically the same exact thing as before, and the battle system has barely evolved. I know this seems a bit hypocritical, but they need to give the battle system a real overhaul. At least with the Final Fantasy games, they introduced new and different mechanics. Espers in FF6, Materia and Limit Breaks in FF7, Junctions in FF8, equipment providing new skills in FF9, and the strategy-encouraging turn meter in FFX.

Dragon Quest IX... eh, I'm kinda tired of the series, anyway. The quest always seems to drag on too long to hold my interest. And, again, they have one of the most boring turn-based battle systems.

                Oh, and one more thing...

Yes, "she". You know any guys out there named Erika? I don't think so.

And I'm tempted to comment on the "kiddy" remark, but I've never been able to convince you guys of my gaming habits before, so I'm not gonna bother.

You could have complete control over all your characters if you wanted.

But if you choose to do that, the pace of the battle doesn't slow down any for you. The thing I like about turn-based systems, and strat-rpgs, is the ability to slow down and take my time. Not that I want that with every game, but it's nice not to feel harried once in a while.

This is just flat wrong though. I can't name another rpg, action-, strat- or otherwise, that gives you more control over a battle. The only instances where this wasn't true was in the extremely high mark hunts (optional) and maybe a couple boss fights. And those fights played like standard rpg faire... grind grind grind on the boss' hp and/or only one strategy works.
