I know Sony says they want a longer cycle this time, but you know when Microsoft
starts showing the damn Xbox <insert numbers> they'll throw that out the window.
Amen, brothers. This whole new-system-every-other-year thing is nothing but a seductive hell on those of us who are strapped for cash. I mean, the fact that I got a Wii was nothing short of a miracle (in this case, an aunt who is both generous and a fellow electronics enthusist). It was a present for my graduation, which I am very thankful for. (Fingers crossed for a PS3 this year!)
The "10 year life cycle" of PS3 is including the system's continued life after the next one comes out. PS3 came out 6 and a half years after PS2 did but as long as they're still shipping new systems the life cycle hasn't ended. They've also learned that being first out of the gate can be a big advantage by seeing MS take that edge and run with it.
So don't be surprised when PS4 comes out in 2010/11 and Sony is still saying PS3 has a 10-year cycle.
But the PS3 doesn't really have much out for it right now.

How are we ever going to get decent games from this juggernauts of power when we keep jumping consoles? It's silly. PS3 is capable of so much more that what's it's displayed so far--I wonder if it'll ever have the chance to push the system to its limits.
EDIT: Oh come on, we've pretty much shifted focus from Wii to talking about new Consoles.
