I bet the guy that wrote the Parasite Eve novel is like, "alright, what is this ****."
I keep hearing the story is horrendous, and that puzzles me. Hideaki Sena is a very talented writer, and it's not like he's retired from writing or anything. why not throw some money at him and have him come up with something scary and mysterious and thought-provoking if the best you can come up with is alternate-dimension time-travel body-jacking nonsense?
SERIOUSLY, WHO THE **** IS WRITING THE STORIES IN THESE SQUARE-ENIX GAMES AND WHERE DID THEY COME FROM AND HOW CAN WE SEND THEM BACK THERE.

We need to dive into their bodies and travel into the past in order to preserve our future. I don't really get it, either. I don't understand how grown men write these things and think that they can call it a day.

And it's not like Square hasn't pushed out good storylines in the past. Whoever is in charge of scenario direction for these recent games needs to get replaced in the worst way. Personally, I blame Kingdom Hearts. It opened up the floodgates for this phycobabble nonsense.

Basically, the scenario is the worst of Final Fantasy VII and Kingdom Hearts mushed together. To say more, and to answer josh's Eve question, would be spoiler territory.

Hideaki Sena, far as I can tell, had nothing to do this. Motomu Toriyama, who also did the "scenarios" for FFX, FFX-2 and FFXIII, is credited as scenario writer for 3rd Birthday. He's also directing FFXIII-2. Joy.

So, aim all missiles at him, i guess.

That is the same thing I thought of while playing the game. Honestly, what are people thinking. The story of The 3rd Birthday is the opposite of Parasite Eve. Like they wrote down a bunch of silly ideas, put them in a hat, and then drew them at random. At the end they want to make it seem that these events are connected or even relevant, but they fail. Feels like they were making up the plot as they were making the game itself. They get to the end and are all like "****! We don't know what to do... come up with something quick!" Hideaki would probably be ashamed of this.

Managed to beat it a second time and get the 'hidden' ending.

Easily one of the most confusing stories ever, you have to read emails and talk to everyone repeatedly to get the whole story. Its an interesting story, with only one real plot hole. They imply alot too, trying to link the first two games.

Plot in a nutshell:
First, "Third Birthday" refers to the awakening of the Mitochondria. PE1 = first birthday, PE2 = Second Birthday.

Its one year after the events in Parasite Eve 2. Aya adopted Eve as a sister.

Aya is marrying Kyle, when for some reason(Its never explained) a SWAT team busts into the church and guns everyone down. Eve(Aya's clone from PE2) unlocks a new power which allows her to possess others(Overdive), she possesses the original Aya's body and guns down the SWAT, cuasing all the problems in the game, this point is dubbed "Zero Time".

Eve, now in Aya's body unintentionally 'shattered' Aya's soul in the process. Eve's body(The Mitochondrion) degenerated and possesses the members in attendance creating "The Highborn", which are time aware super beings. As her body degenerated, the memories she had as Eve were lost(She now thinks she is the real Aya)

Turns out the fragments of Aya's soul eventually coalesce and form the "Twisted" which are barely sentient creatures that are also time-aware. They don't form until in the distant future, they sense their defects and wish to correct the time distortion caused when Eve overdived into Aya. The Highborn become buffers of sorts disallowing the Twisted from traveling to Time Zero.

Hyde Bohr is one of the 'Highborn' and manipulates Eve(in Aya's body) into overdiving into the past and eliminating the other Highborn while they're dormant(Doing so also restores Eve's memories). Killing the Highborn in the past further distorts time, allowing the Twisted to form larger and larger Babel Towers(Which is how they travel time).

Once only Hyde is left, he flees to the largest Babel Tower with Eve chasing after. Eve battles him, and defeats him, only to travel to Time Zero herself. Repeating the events exactly the same as above, repeating the time loop. Hyde Bohr reveals his defeat a feint, and tries to convince Eve to kill Aya and to reclaim her original body to ensure the evolution of the Highborn continues.

Eve returns to her original body, but refuses to initiate the time loop by jumping into Aya again. Hyde attempts to kill her, but the real Aya shoots and kills him. Cue tearful reunion and moral dilemma. Eve wants to live on, but to exist in her true body would bring future tragedy.

The real Aya initiates an overdive, and allows Eve to switch bodies with her. Killing both Eves body, Ayas soul, but allowing Eve to live on. Eve does so, ending the time loop, and preventing the Twisted and Highborn from existing. Time resets.

Eve(in Aya's body) is getting married to Kyle. Kyle realizes what has happened(somehow), and tells Eve she doesn't need to be someone else. Kyle promises to seek out Aya 'into eternity'. Cue credits.

'Hidden' ending is shown for two completions. Its a year later. Eve lives on in Aya's body, while walking down the street a hooded figure strongly resembling the real Aya(And having the same voice actor) wishes Eve a happy fourth birthday. Hooded figure dissipates before Eve can turn around.
