Re: Anyone hate driving as much as me?

I actually have quite a phobia of driving. This have been a pain in the ass for years, but at least I'm a pretty good driver. Don't have much of a choice, other than driving to get to the places I need to go. I can't exactly go: "Beam me up, Scotty."

I actually love driving. I think it's a lot of fun. When I just need to be by myself for a while, I hit some winding country roads in my GTI -- windows down and sunroof open rocking Guero or something like it.

I found that turning on the windshield fluid on long enough for it to spray back on the tailgater usually works. But only if the car is clean.

Mine doesn't work properly. One of the sprays shoots off the side of my car.
...Which actually would help when people try to pass me on the curb. Mmm-hmm-hmm.

I hate driving. Mostly because in this country it is virtually compulsory, by design. We have crap for mass transit, most places biking is not allowed on the sidewalks making it too dangerous with all the idiot drivers(UI've nearly been killed on multiple occassions and had my bike destroyed by an SUV), and our roads are suited to cars more than pedestrians. Further, if you drive you are legally obligated to have insurance with your only choices being for profit companies, forcing you to pay 40%+ of your insurance bill to profit margins. It's a government sanctioned scam! Further with gas prices the way they are, I'm driving like a granny as of late. I go 45-50 in a 60 mph zone in 5th gear to save gas(I don't have much money). People get pissed, but I always return the finger.

Racing on the otherhand, is a wholly different ballpark. I LOVE racing. I love nothing better than to hit an empty highway at 2AM and barrel down it at 120+, or take the car to the racetrack the times it's open in the summer. Scouting for cops isn't too hard. They're always out looking for drunks. A back and forth sweep across the stretch you wish to make your run is sufficiently reliable.

But if I could, I'd eliminate normal driving from my habits. I hate needing a car for transportation, and would rather view it as something for recreation. That's where my electric car in progress comes into play: it will serve both functions well. With peak oil's effects setting in, I'll be able to commute via bike in a few years once 90%+ of all the cars are off the road due to gas prices($3/gallon isn't crap. Wait for $10, or $15, if you'll be able to get it at all within the decade), and I'll have mostly empty roads to myself with the electric as it will certainly be finished by then...

So you'll have the only car on the road huh?

Need I remind you of last summer's blockbuster hit WAR OF THE WORLDS?

I hate driving but it sure beats out not having your own method of transportation.

Re: Anyone hate driving as much as me?

Maybe not right away, but given the effects peak oil will have, gas could very well be $15+/gallon within a decade. Even with a cheap to run electric car, I'd rather bike in most cases.

Given that I see cars as a wasteful use of the planet's resources, I would rather keep cars for their one useful purpose: motorsport. Using them for day to day tasks is the height of idiocy, yet our society gives us little choice.

At $15+/gallon, I can garuntee you only rich men, law enforcement/military, or people who have alternative fueled cars like I will have will be driving, and in a very critical scenario where society collapses outright, there's an offchance of bandits and nomads but unlikely and well within the realm of science fiction. Those with alternative fueled cars who can actually make their own fuel(ie. solar panels for an electric car, a large patch of cannabis for making biodiesel, ect.) will have something unique to their neighborhood.

If I ever move to a big city for a job, I'm likely to call a cab instead of driving. Or maybe a bus. Depending on what's cheapest.

Re: Anyone hate driving as much as me?

Since i drive for a living, I have no real choice on the matter. Personally I like driving, not on the crowded, busy streets, but on any other driving surface I enjoy it. Where I live I don't need to deal with the congestion too much because it's A) Not that big a town and B) I can always use sidestreets to get around the congestion.

Just last night I was out after 2:30 AM driving around town, listening to Blue Collar Radio. Satellite radio kicks ass. I was about to go insane with the lack of variety of radio in my town. There are no heavy metal stations and way too many country stations.

Further, if you drive you are legally obligated to have insurance with your only choices being for profit companies, forcing you to pay 40%+ of your insurance bill to profit margins.
This is one of those necessary evils, though. The couple of times I got in accidents I'm glad the other guy had insurance, otherwise I'd have needed to pay to fix my own car. In which case I'd be banging out the dents with his skull!

I hate driving as well. Especially since over here ya got those Autobahns and NO ONE, EVER, pays attention to the rules they were tought in diver's ed.

                              - There's always some car on my back trying to pass at any attempt it may get. (I drive even a bit faster than the speed limit and there's still some guy on my arse)
                              - They drive too dam fast, even in places where you have to drive slow and be aware of your surroundings
                              - Agressive driving, anyone? I feel like everytime I'm out there in my car it's a test of my adrenaline and abilities to hold back any stress coming from the other drivers who are so careless/reckless in their driving.
                              - They drive too fast.
                              - There's always construction somewhere.. always..
                              - Did I mention they drive TOO FAST?
                              - It's hell on the streets. On wet roads they drive even faster.
                              - Neither snow, rain or hail will stop them from slowing down... It's just the opposite..

Sometimes.. At 3am in the morning or on Sundays, when the streets are clear.. Yeah, driving is a lot of fun.

Yes, but it is not necessary to have the only options for insurance being companies where much of the bill doesn't go to paying for accident damage but instead to lining the pockets of a few wealthy execs and shareholders. Get rid of the profit margins and only allow the insurance company to break even on expenses and costs of expansion, and your premium could be cut by nearly half. Of course, that is unfeasible if a free market is wished to be maintained, so why doesn't America have a non-profit government run insurance choice, that operates on no taxes and uses the premiums alone to stay afloat, only seeking to break even? It would allow choice, one could still get a private insurance company if they wish, or get cheaper rates if they went the public route(although the private companies would hate this because they'd have to lower rates to compete).

If you drive, the government is basically forcing you to pay someone profit margins. This is an affront to individual freedom when alternatives to driving are purposely kept limited. It's like a tax, only instead of going to your government with at least some expected to return to the public infrastructure(depending on how inefficient government is in that case), it goes to some business types with no legal obligation to anyone but themselves.
