Re: This hill sure is silent - ZERO HOUR

Why is LONDON the BYLINE for THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER?!?!?

Radha and Christophe are still overselling it.

LOL WE PLAYED THE GAMES ON THE SET

      That sounds a bit disingenuous.

It looks like the fans are already on it... What a line.

I saw it. That is to say, I seen it.

They did a GREAT job on the effects and the monsters. Pyramid Head is so sexy it HURTS. While there are some "HUH" parts, I was pleased with it overall. They toss music around a lot, using stuff from every game just... where ever. It was a little strange to hear all that boss music when there were no bosses around.... The ending was a nice touch.

Also, Rose endeared herself to me almost instantly by... running into something!!! YESSSSSSS!!!

Anyway, I have to go run errands this afternoon, then my friends might drag me to another showing this evening.

So it's exactly like Silent Hill.

                Uh, what?

I meant they use music from 1, 2, 3&4 in a game based off 1. I heard a lot of odd stuff, including a good version of "wounded warsong."

That was a reference to SH4's weird/illogical sound direction when it came to what played when.

                        Some loser thinks it's decent!

Without going into much detail, I think any fan of the series will enjoy this movie. Sure, there are some things that didn't gel with me, but that didn't ruin the experience at all.

I'm going to see it again later on with the friend who first introduced me to the series. I got him all excited by mentioning:

Yeah! Tonight at 10 I finally get to see it. The reason for watching it then is because I want to have nightmares tonight. I actually made my sister and one of my friends agree to watching it with me. Nightmares all round! If not I'm going to be really ****ed off.

I see Mora already noted that it wasn't screened for critics, which basically means that studio had no faith that it would get even marginally good reviews. Joy. It also doesn't help that a few of AICN's reviews indicates that the Studio was less than pleased with the film.

Maybe I'm a fanboy, but I liked it.

                            BEWARE! HERE BE SPOILERS!

It kind of lost me when they got to the exposition point. I really still think that they should have done Silent Hill 2's plot first, as that is self-contained, and makes a lot more sense (in many ways, they made the plot make even less sense than Silent Hill 1's, and I'm still not 100% sure I understood what the hell happened in that game). Plus there were a few things that bugged me, like the movie never explaining why Pyramid Head all of a sudden called off his attack (I know why, pretty much, but it would have been nice for the movie to say so).

A lot of the reviews I've read say it's too long, and I kind of agree. I also agree that the movie would be a lot tighter if they ditched all of Christopher's scenes. It works best as a surrealistic nightmare. I think what Avery missed is that you have to make the fact that you don't know what the hell is happening work for you (and on that point, they should have kept the fact that Harry "died" when the kids attacked him in SH1, rather than having the kids just burn up...I think it would have added to the whole WTF feeling the film needs to work). He should have just kept the core that Rose wants to find her daughter, and have her focus on that so that it becomes more about the journey and less about why it's happening. If I were rewriting it, I'd make Rose's breakdown at the school the major point of the character, and have it be the epiphany that no matter what happens she's just looking for her daughter. Make it like an extremely messed up Alice in Wonderland.

I also would have liked to have seen a few more gags from the games put in, such as the phone thing from SH1. I also feel that instead of pulling an "architect" scene, they should have split the exposition into the relevant scenes, like I thought they were originally going to do with the first flash at the school. That way you wouldn't have the movie suddenly stop cold at the 3/4's mark and lose all its momentum.

Also, why the hell was "the demon's" voice all weird in the commercial, yet perfectly normal at the end?

For the record I'd give it probably *** 1/2 stars up to the exposition scene and then ** 1/2 after that scene.

                            SAFE NOW YOU WUSSES

I noticed that they tapped SH2's score well the most, which I found interesting. I still love that they used the actual game's soundtrack.

Maybe it's a film just for fans, but then again I'm a fan so I liked it.

One last note. I just read Ebert's review, and yet again he manages to stick it to the video game fans. Joy.

One other small thing that bugged me:

                                SPOILERS!

What was up with the knife? Rose takes it, and I figured that maybe this means she'd actually kill something, but then she almost immediately loses it. I mean, it serves no narrative purpose nor does it add to the atmosphere. You could cut the 45 seconds it's in the film and it would not harm the movie in the least!

                                SAFE NOW!

And I read now that the first script submitted did not have Christopher in it. The studio made him add a major male character. So I guess I can blame the studio for all those pointless scenes. Then again, I still think that changing Harry to Rose wasn't the best decision.
