    Schoolwork survey: Vidya gaems

I have to do a survey for my Game Design class. I'd appreciate it if some people could fill it out and post it here, or PM it to me if you swing that way. I need a total of 5 male and 5 female responses to finish it, but I'll be posting this across a few places for diversity.

Oh, 18 years or older onry preese.

    The questions
    1. How old are you?

    2. What game(s) titles do you like to play?

    3. Why do you like those games?

    4. How long do you usually play it/them in terms of hours per day and how many times per week?

    5. On a scale of 1 – 10 with the latter being the strongest designation, how much of an influence does violent video games have on one’s aggression?

    6. On a scale of 1 – 10 with the latter being the strongest designation, how much of an influence does violent video games have on a child’s psychological development?

    7. What is your profession?

Thank you for your time and assistance in me not failing college.

    Re: Schoolwork survey: Vidya gaems

I was filling this out for you, then I realized that I only play video games probably once or twice a month now.

But I have a question--did you write this survey or was it provided to you?

        The questions
        1. How old are you?

        26

        2. What game(s) titles do you like to play?

All genres and types except for sports. My favorite types of games focus on storytelling and design.

        3. Why do you like those games?

I think there is a lot of potential for storytelling where the audience plays a role in crafting the tale. Shadow of the Colossus, for example, was much more powerful because you were the one killing the colossi. I’m also a big fan of design and I like to see games that feature innovative and creative characters and places. For example, I like Legend of Mana a lot. It’s a terrible game, but the design is so strong that I can’t help but to love it.

        4. How long do you usually play it/them in terms of hours per day and how many times per week?

I play on average about and hour and a half a day, or seventeen and a half a week.

        5. On a scale of 1 – 10 with the latter being the strongest designation, how much of an influence does violent video games have on one’s aggression?

        1

        6. On a scale of 1 – 10 with the latter being the strongest designation, how much of an influence does violent video games have on a child’s psychological development?

        4

        7. What is your profession?

Opertations Management Center Support Specialist at Comcast Cable.

          The questions
          1. How old are you?
26 (BTW, I'm Female if you didn't know already.)
          2. What game(s) titles do you like to play?
Currently: RPGMakers, KOTOR 1 and 2, Jade Empire, and Occasionally Guild Wars
          3. Why do you like those games?
I dig Fantasy/Sci-Fi RPG's. It comes from my upbringing.
          4. How long do you usually play it/them in terms of hours per day and how many times per week?
Depends on my mood. It waxes and wanes: When I am into it, I can put a good 5-8 hours in a game in a single day, seven days a week. When I am not into it, maybe an hour once a week.
          5. On a scale of 1 – 10 with the latter being the strongest designation, how much of an influence does violent video games have on one’s aggression?
A steadfast 0, honestly. I don't think that violent video games actually influence one's aggression, but subsides it. Violent video games are an outlet, not an input. It offers a way to allow one's agression to be projected on something virtual, rather then literal. I think actually violent video games are very therapeutic.
          6. On a scale of 1 – 10 with the latter being the strongest designation, how much of an influence does violent video games have on a child’s psychological development?
Perhaps a 5 or 6 in that matter. Children are natural students, and they learn from the environment around them. I'm not saying that it will teach them to become particularly violent (unless they can witness adults doing the same.) But some children who are not properly educated can find it very hard to differentiate between reality and fantasy.
          7. What is your profession?
          Preschool teacher.

          Good luck with you survey.

            1. I'm 22 years old, and male.

            2. Lately the titles I've played most are...
Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Wii, rated T)
Karaoke Revolution series (PS2, rated E10)
Civilization IV (PC, I think it's rated E10)
            RPG Maker 3 (PS2, rated T)
Tales of Symphonia (GC, rated T)
            Disgaea 2 (PS2, rated T)
Guild Wars (PC online, rated T)
Mario Kart: Double Dash (GC, I think it's rated E)
            Guitar Hero II (PS2, I think it's rated T)

            3. I like my games for different reasons. Civilization, Disgaea and Guild Wars challenge me intellectually and offer a great sense of reward when I figure out strategies that work. Karaoke and Guitar Hero are very viscerally pleasing and feel like I'm actually building skill at something genuine. Mario Kart and SSB Brawl are games that I play mainly with my friends; the interaction and competition with my friends as I play is just pure fun. Symphonia, besides being a lot of pure fun, also has provided me with a lot of its attachment to its very likable characters. RPG Maker lets me turn things I've imagined into reality; the sense of creating things has always appealed to me. I've noticed that both the more "physical" games (Karaoke, Guitar Hero) and the slightly violent games (Guild Wars, Disgaea, Brawl and Symphonia) are great stress relief, the catharsis they provide, along with a little alone-time, rarely fails to completely get rid of my anger.

            4. I probably play video games about an average of twice a week, with an average session length of 3-4 hours.

            5. Two out of Ten. Except in disgustingly reprehensible games like Manhunt, I think the cathartic effect provides more good than the exposure to violence provides harm. Even a game like Grand Theft Auto, from my experience, is more of a fling of escapism than it is an ideal that anyone's going to imitate.

            6. Four out of Ten. Children's development is certainly going to be affected by what they see, whether it's in real life, video games, or some other media. But I don't think violence is nearly the biggest thing they get from games, and I think you were asking specifically about inspiring violent tendencies.

            7. I'm a college student at the moment. I'm probably going to go into IT consulting or something of the like, so put that down if you want to.

Best of luck with the surveys!

              1. How old are you?
              23. I'ms a guy.

              2. What game(s) titles do you like to play?
Halo 3, Tekken 5, DDR, any ship-based shoot 'em up you put in front of me(G-Darius and Ikaruga are my favorites)

              3. Why do you like those games?

Halo 3? You get to play online, and smack someone 300+ miles away in the face! I play Tekken 5 for the visceral feeling of beating the crap out of a person with exaggerated martial arts techniques and laser beams. It's fast and requires a moderate amount of strategy. I play DDR because it combines 2 of my favorite things(listening to music and playing games) and makes one thing a little more tolerable(exercise). I play shmups for fast paced blasting of various objects.

              4. How long do you usually play it/them in terms of hours per day and how many times per week?
Average of an hour a day, around 6 times a week.

              5. On a scale of 1 – 10 with the latter being the strongest designation, how much of an influence does violent video games have on one’s aggression?
              7. Do you want me to provide opinions/reasoning?

              6. On a scale of 1 – 10 with the latter being the strongest designation, how much of an influence does violent video games have on a child’s psychological development?
              5. Do you want me to provide opinions/reasoning?

              7. What is your profession?

                15
                2. What game(s) titles do you like to play?
Monster Hunter, Guitar Hero 3, Super Smash Bros Brawl.
                3. Why do you like those games?
You can pick them up and play them and play what ever you want when you want. And no real story to follow.
                4. How long do you usually play it/them in terms of hours per day and how many times per week?
I probally play Guitar Hero 10 hours a week. Super Smash Brothers Brawl 2 hours a week. And Monster Hunter ( Since its old ) 1 hour a week.
                5. On a scale of 1 – 10 with the latter being the strongest designation, how much of an influence does violent video games have on one’s aggression?
If there mature enough for it 0. However I feel parents should follow the ESRB a lot more. I know kids who are 7 that are play Man Hunt 2. I mean C'mon. I think games rated M can usually be played by kids that are 15. Becuase most are mature enough to handle it.
                6. On a scale of 1 – 10 with the latter being the strongest designation, how much of an influence does violent video games have on a child’s psychological development?
5 some it has no effect some it has a lot.

                    Re: Schoolwork survey: Vidya gaems

I'm not 18, but I love filling surveys out so whatever O.o

                    1. How old are you?

                    16

                    2. What game(s) titles do you like to play?

RPGs/Adventure games, Action/FPS games, Strategy games (RT or TB).

                    3. Why do you like those games?

I like RPGs for the story and the characters, and the sense of adventure. I like Action/FPSs because they are exciting and I don't get to shoot people in real life (wouldn't really want to anyway), and finally I like strategy games because I like to micromanage things, most of the time, that is. Ruling an empire in Civilization or strategizing with other players on Warcraft/Starcraft's battle.net is really appealing to me.

                    4. How long do you usually play it/them in terms of hours per day and how many times per week?

Some weeks its not at all, some weeks it's 2-3 hours every day. Depends on how busy I am. Generally I play a video game at least once per week, like on the weekend.

                    5. On a scale of 1 – 10 with the latter being the strongest designation, how much of an influence does violent video games have on one’s aggression?

On just anyone? I suppose it depends on the person. If you're a very impressionable person who's looking to be influenced, I'd say they can have a huge influence. However I think most people aren't sheep who just absorb what a video game feeds them they think for themselves.

Personally, I don't play many violent video games (mostly only T rated games), I do play shooters and the like, but I don't feel very influenced by them. It's cool to be James Bond for awhile and shoot down bad guys, but I wouldn't want to do it in real life.

So I guess generally speaking I'd say a violent video game has only a small amount of influence on one's aggression, so I'd rate it as a 3. Possibly a 4.

                    6. On a scale of 1 – 10 with the latter being the strongest designation, how much of an influence does violent video games have on a child’s psychological development?

As opposed to the previous question, I'd say violent video games have more of an effect on children than older people. Children I think are more impressionable than older people, so they tend to suck in things and take thingsto heart more. I'd say it's a bad idea to give a 8 year old a violent game to play, since it could very well have a effect on their development.

I'd rate it as an 8.

                    7. What is your profession?

Full time student =P, tenatively planning on majoring in bioengineering/biochemistry when I go to college (a little more than a year from now, I'm a Junior).

Honestly, the age doesn't really matter that much; I'm willing to fudge the data a bit if I come up short. Doesn't look like that's going to be a problem though, between here and the other places I posted it.

Yeah, to hell with your regulations!

                        1. How old are you?

                        15

                        2. What game(s) titles do you like to play?

Final Fantasy, Mega Man Legends, Super Smash Brawl, Pokemon, Starcraft, Guild Wars, Guitar Hero.

                        3. Why do you like those games?

Games with what I consider a good story, and games with twists, such as Final Fantasy and MML, are my favorite games to play. Games that involve strategy and get me thinking also tickle my fancy. Oh, and then there's the senseless beating that I enjoy dealing out in Brawl.

                        4. How long do you usually play it/them in terms of hours per day and how many times per week?

                        I play a good 3-4 hours a day, and about 40 something hours a week. I'm bad, I know.

                        5. On a scale of 1 – 10 with the latter being the strongest designation, how much of an influence does violent video games have on one’s aggression?

                        2

                        6. On a scale of 1 – 10 with the latter being the strongest designation, how much of an influence does violent video games have on a child’s psychological development?

                        5

                        7. What is your profession?

I used to work at a lake. Does that count?

                          Re: Schoolwork survey: Vidya gaems

                          The questions
                          1. How old are you? I am a male of 36 years of age.

                          2. What game(s) titles do you like to play? I mainly enjoy RPGs, Strategy games, lately into the "rhythm action" genre (ie-Rock Band, Guitar Hero). Mainly, if a game seems original, and there is some semblance of brainpower involved in playing it, I'll usually enjoy it. The quirkier, the better.

                          3. Why do you like those games? Lack of anything better to do. Why I like them as opposed to shooters, sports games, etc, is mainly because I've been playing video games since the Atari 2600, and a lot of games have a been-there, done-that feel to them. It really takes a LOT for me to stand up and take notice of a game, or, I should say, to have it stand out for me.

                          4. How long do you usually play it/them in terms of hours per day and how many times per week? Per day...usually 1-2 hours. Per week, probably 15 or so hours...in terms of how many TIMES I play a week, I usually play them at least once a day, so 7 times a week.

                          5. On a scale of 1 – 10 with the latter being the strongest designation, how much of an influence does violent video games have on one’s aggression?

I believe it depends on the person's maturity level and, perhaps, their upbringing. I believe that in this case, if the person may have been raised in an abusive environment, or in a violent community, where violence is already a way of life for them, and they may have been desensitized to it, I can see video games possibly influencing one's aggressive tendencies. However, if one was brought up in a nurturing environment, where the difference between right and wrong has been established and ingrained, I cannot see video games having too much of an impact. On a scale of 1 to 10, I would say that video games influence aggressive tendencies at about a 4. However, I DO NOT think mass murders/school shootings/etc are directly influenced by video games. If the person was already mentally unstable enough to consider doing something like that, he or she did not need any help from video games. Again, I think it depends on upbringing, and I believe it is wrong to demonize an entire form of entertainment due to a miniscule percentage of gamers that make headlines.

                          6. On a scale of 1 – 10 with the latter being the strongest designation, how much of an influence does violent video games have on a child’s psychological development?

It depends on the age of the child. If they are already old enough to be a part of the statistic that says, "A child of X age has seen X amount of violent acts on television and movies," then I do not believe that video games are going to have that much more of an impact on their psychological development, as these other media have already done their damage by that age. What society and media in the 21st century has already propogated on the young mind by that age is irreparable by that point, and I don't see video games having that much more of an impact. The society the child is brought up in today has more influence on his psychological development that, say, playing an hour of Halo a day or watching a Terminator movie. I would have to rate that a 1. For a child younger than, say 4 or 5, I would have to say it would be more in the 7-8 range. But honestly, a parent should be monitoring what their child is playing, anyway.

                          7. What is your profession? Retail.

Some of those questions are just stupid-

Asking opinions on child developement to those who haven't had and/or observed children?

The only way to fix this is to only allow actual parent/guardians of kids who played games at a young age to take the survey; you know, people who might actually know what they're talking about when they give an opinion on it.
