    I hate Christmas.

I'm sorry, but they just started all this Christmas crap at work (secret santa, bring in goodies, ...) and I'm once again reminded of how much I hate all the BS this time of the year brings.

First, I hate the commercial side, from Hallmark to Sears to Wal-mart. I don't think I have to say much else, and I'm sure most people agree with this.

Second, I hate the history of the holiday. I went out of my way a few years ago to read all up on this "holy day" and it just made me sick. It was a seasonal pagan sun god celebration that got 'christianized' by the RC church (along with the pagans), and for some reason the protestants (against Calvin's and Luther's [i think] advice), kept it (even though they got rid of all other holy days [except the Sabbath, of course]). Then America resecularized it. uhh uhh uhh. No matter how religious or irreligious you are, I don't understand how you justify celebrating this hog-wash holiday. And if you celebrate it just because you like how it brings families together, then I'm sure you can find another way to be with your family that doesn't include all the christmas garbage. Ok, I'm getting far off-track now. You can see how emotional this is for me.

Anyways, just about every part of christmas makes me puke. I hate how incinsere people become. I hate faking it. I hate giving gifts. I hate receiving gifts. I stay away from it as much as I can, but because of certain obligations (work, in-laws), I am forced to participate a bit.

Am I the only one who feels this way?

...maybe I'm just biased cause my birthday is the 29th and has always been eclipsed by the big 24-25-31 combination.

    That's probably it.

      Re: I hate Christmas.

Pretty much every holiday not created in the last 100 years was celebrated to cover up a pagan holiday, and every major holiday is commercialized with it's own red tag sale.

      Get over it already.

I'm an atheist, I know the origins of the holiday, and I still celebrate it. Why? Because it's been so twisted from it's origins and christian-cover-up-holiday themes.

If you ignore the massive consumer part of it, its now just a time for people to come together, put differences aside, be cheerful as hell, and give stuff to people they care about. It's my favorite time of year.

Why should I? I like the decorations. I love christmas lights. I like the retarded christmas specials that have been on every year since before I was born. I like setting up a giant plastic tree and stuffing boxes under it.

I love Christmas. I can't really find words to say why, I just do.

It's probably because I like busyness and being around family. I like christmas lights and a good lit up decorated tree, so why would I swap this holiday for any other one? Plus, I love to see the look on people's faces when I give them a gift, I know that seems corny, but it's true.

Christmas is my favorite Pagan holiday!

...although I'm still a little bitter that I'm expected to be w/ my family for Christmas and my boyfriend still isn't allowed inside the house for it. Wouldn't want to "taint" it.

Okay, you guys won't believe this, but right after posting this, I took my lunch break. After eating, I went to my car to play some Elite Beat Agents (just picked up the game a few days ago and haven't had time to play it much).

Anyways, the next level I started was a friggin Christmas level. It even ended with a big "Merry Christmas."

Even the Elite Beat Agents are against me

                  (sorry for the double post)
Valk, you're right. I studied philosphy and I still use the origin fallacy (or poisoning the well) all the time. The real reason I dislike it is has nothing to do with its origins, but because of how fake it appears to me today. Or, moreso, it just stems from my hatred of just about everything that is culturally popular.

Ironically, modern scholars think it was more likely that Christ was born close to, or on, Halloween.

I really don't care about the origins of the holiday but I hate hate hate the celibration of consumerism. Yeah it should be a time of togetherness and enjoying the company of family and friends, but it never is. It's carols in every shop from the day after Thanksgiving and garish decorations enticing you to come a buy. It's nonstop ads and obligations all coated with the pretense of "good chear." It's all so hallow.

I thought it was in May.

The best thing about Christmas is that you can MAKE IT YOURS! You can still make if about Jesus through all the commercials. You can still celebrate Christmas, even if you're atheist or Jewish - that just shows how much Christmas kicks ass. That's what the Christmas spirit is all about! Kicking ass!!

Still, I was walking around today, and saw that some household had already set up a Christmas tree. Now THAT is early. I mean, I love Christmas. That's what makes working hard with Christmas break so close that much harder!

My roommates set up their tree on Black Friday.

And they made me help. They didn't stop calling me a grinch untill I spread out some fake treebranches.

I only think the Christmas stuff gets annoying when there's commercials and all that other stuff before Thanksgiving. Except for the city putting the lights up on the streets, but that's because they're just setting them up, and they only light up starting Thanksgiving. After Thanksgiving, time for Christmas stuff. In fact, I've been meaning to get to my own tree. But I'm too lazy to get around to it.
