    EA gold farming?

Electronic Arts has released its first wave of downloadable content for the Xbox 360 version of The Godfather, and gamers are likely to find the offer at hand a little more refusable than the ones that normally come from Don Corleone.

Xbox Live director of programming Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb details the new slate of downloads on his blog, and a couple of items stand out from the pack. First of all, the $50,000, $100,000, and $250,000 in-game money packs each increase the player's bankroll at the cost of 40 Microsoft points ($0.50), 75 Microsoft points ($0.94), and 150 ($1.88) Microsoft points, respectively. Each pack can only be downloaded once. Virtually impoverished gamers may be drawn to download the packs, as the Xbox 360 version of The Godfather apparently lacks the cheat code for free money that can be found in the PC, PlayStation 2, Xbox, and PlayStation Portable versions of the game.

Player who need something to spend their downloaded money on can then pick up five different weapon packs for 100 points ($1.25) a pop that each open up the ability for the player to purchase one high-powered weapon from a specific in-game arms dealer. That power comes at a price, however, as the most expensive of the weapons, the level 4 Tommy Gun, will set players back $750,000 in-game. For 250 Microsoft points ($3.13), gamers can add the hired assassin to their list of employable crew members. However, the assassin still has to be paid $10,000 in-game to join up.

So they want you to buy weapon packs to download then buy in-game money to buy the weapons with? Microtransactions are the future and the future is bleak indeed.

Nobody, but I am concerned about the horrid direction the microtransaction thing is going. They're purposely leaving things out of the game (like the free money cheat in every other version of The Godfather) just so they can charge people for them.

What stupid is these cheats are free in all other versions of the game!

        I hate this trend!

Soon enough people are going to wonder why they spent $50 on a menu screen.

Then another $5 for a Save option.

then another $10 for a Load option.

Then another $12 for the main character.

          Then another etc..

This is the sort of thing that keeps me from picking up a 360. You're going to charge me for new content on a game I've already purchased? I'd prefer it free, but fine, I'll pay for it, if the content interests me.

You're going to charge me for content that's been excluded and then parcel it out to me piece by piece, charging for each bit? Not Cool.

It seems to me the first scenario was used as the bit of sugar that made it easier for consumers to swallow the bitter pill that is the second.

I was never interested in The Godfather so this doesn't affect me right now, but the threat of it affecting the few games I might be interested on the 360 is enough to keep me from buying the system until I see how everything is going to fall out.

I've studied enough economics to know these MS "points" and their arbitrary 4 pts to 5 cents conversion ratio are nothing more than veils to disguise how much a person is spending. Like chips at a casino, introducing a barrier that makes spending money less real, makes your consumer much more willing to part with his funds.
So you're a fish out of water...
            Keep swimming.
            What else can you do?

anybody surprised that "microtransactions" (also known as "normal transactions") suck and will be missused by anybody who gets their hands on them needs to smack themselves in the face right now

As long as they dont start releasing things for multiplayer games that give players a HUGE advantage over players who dont have them, im alright with it.

Hell, back in Mechassualt 1 and 2, they were releasing map packs and new mechs that cost you money. I was alright with it, except that when playing online the host switched the match to a map you didnt pay for, they'd boot you from the game, because the game wont start unless everybody has that map pack.

I heard KH3 was completely made of microtransactions, so that if you wanted to finish the game 100%, you had to buy all the worlds first.

It's already bad enough paying 59.99 for a next-gen game. I ain't spending more money to add on to it!

There's also a shitstorm about Lumines Live being just a crippled version of the PSP Lumines and that you need to spend a lot more in microtransactions to get it up to snuff.

It should be unacceptable that the 360 version of games charge you for things that come pre-packed in every other version. I heard that the alternate uniforms in Madden for the 360 cost money, when they're been automatically included in the game since the beginning of the damn franchise. Unacceptable.

The trend for these kinds of threads now is to start with, BOHICA. That stands for Bend Over Here It Comes Again.
