Street Fighter vs. King of Fighters

    Help me settle a dispute.

The other night, my friend and I were having a discussion about 2D fighting games. The two of us are fighting game fanatics and have been playing them for years. We're not professionals, but we have fun just beating each other senseless. However, the similarities end there. Because the moment Street Fighter and King of Fighters came into mind, chaos erupted. We've both played a lot of 2D fighting games since Street Fighter II, but both Street Fighter and King of Fighters have nabbed much of our attention.

Amidst our discussion, which later grew quite heated, I told my friend that Street Fighter is the most balanced of the games, and had it not been for it, King of Fighters would probably have not existed. My friend argues that King of Fighters delivers a more diverse cast of characters, the option to edit teams, and just basically more depth. We could have settled this argument by playing a fighting game, but between Street Fighter and King of Fighters, we were deadlocked. The irony of it is that I would have beaten him in Street Fighter, and he would have beaten me in King of Fighters. This is due to the fact that both of us have played one game more than the other.

The two of us are vastly familiar with SF and KoF because they're the most recognized of the 2D fighters. (At least, I think so.)

I told my friend about my association with the Pavilion, and he suggested I ask the people there what they think, between Street Fighter and King of Fighters, which of the 2D fighting games is better, and why they think so. Or if they so desired, what 2D fighting game other than SF or KoF could knock both of them out of the squared circle?Could Ryu defeat Kyo? Is Chun Li more beautiful than Mai Shiranui? Is it possible for Joe Higashi to win a fight against Adon or Sagat?

I leave the forum to you all. Hopefully, my friend and I will finally settle this argument at long last, and we need your help. Tell me.....

....which is better? Street Fighter or King of Fighters?

Despite what you think, I am very, very real.

Street Fighter certainly has the more attractive characters, at least. Mai's "in case of an emergency, these boobs may be used as a flotation device" rack seems to be the catylist for having Pluto demoted as a planet - If pluto was a planet, so were the orbital entities on Mai's chest.

That right there is enough for street fighter to win.

There is clearly one way to settle this. You and your friend must engage in...

      MORTAL KOMBAT.

Actually, I'm partial to Street Fighter Alpha 3 myself. It's my favorite fighting game and I don't get to play it nearly as much as I'd like to. A lot of SF fans seem to prefer Street Fighter III: Third Strike though and find that to be the "best" fighting game, with Alpha 3 coming in at second. As for King of Fighters, I've never played it or cared to look up much about it. I always considered the Street Fighter series better because of nostalgia I guess. As far back as I can remember Street Fighter II seems to be the first game that sticks out to me that was really worthwhile.
      Keep the change.

Yeah, after searching around the net trying to find KOF information... there doesn't seem to be much on it. Or many people talking about it.

Not saying KOF is inferior, cause lesser known/played games can be pretty damn good... but it definitely has no where NEAR the following that SF does. Hell, I can't even find any decent discussions about KOF.

            Ive played both many times.

And I love the hell out of KoF.

I love the backgrounds and stories of some of the characters.

Granted lately the plots been assy and new characters ******.

But its an insanely solid and skillful game.

You can never put these games up to dispute with a group of people because the game people have played most is Street Fighter. Its more popular.

But for me Ill always love King Of Fighters.

Heidern and Yamazaki could take on anyone in Street Fighter.

King of Fighters is a quite a bit more popular than you'd think, though mainly in places outside of the US. In Japan, I would assume you'd find serious discussions about KOF much easier to search out. Here, though, 2D games garner more of a cult following, so most 2D fighters haven't been publicized well. Street Fighter, at least, has name recognition going for it. It originated the popular 1-on-1 "duel" format most fighters use, and gained worldwide attention for it.

              ...anyway, I digress.

As for which fighter is better, who cares?

We should instead take a lesson from Capcom and SNK by calling over 40 of our dearest friends, splitting up into teams of three or four, and then having a massive, screaming, sweaty orgy.

Re: Street Fighter vs. King of Fighters

I'd have to say King of Fighters definitely has the better characters and personality, but Street Fighter is a bit more balanced, overall. IMHO, it's a close call, but if you take Street Fighter 3 into consideration, then I think the Street Fighter series is slightly better.

Any kof games I've played with skilled players just turns into "Rushdown, insanely damaging combo, rushdown, insanely damaging combo, rushdown, super combo."
"At first it just looked like a picture of a bunch of lily pads, but then I started scraping at it with my pocket knife and the whole painting just sort of spoke to me," Schmidt said. "For the first time, I finally understand what Monet was trying to get across in her work."

Basicaly dashing, or wave dashing in some games, then doing a light hit that comes out fast to start the combo. Keep doing that untill you get through their gaurd. Overwelming so they mess up and you can start a combo.

At least thats my definition. I've heard it used to refer to an overly aggresive play style, or chasing down a fleeing opponent.

Street Fighter. Ken, Ryu, Chun Li... can you get more classic than that?

                            I prefer KoF.

And it's been a crusade of mine to see MK and SF in a game together.

Cause it looks seems so logical.

KoF is pretty much a SF clone. Alot of the characters almost look just like those of SF. And alot of moves seemed borrowed. But despite that, they do have some nice ****, if I say so myself. I'm pretty fond of "K", Mai, and King. In the end, I enjoy SF better... KoF still has a warm spot in the place where my heart used to be. They are my 2 favorite 2-D fighter games.
