Game Making programs (including RPG Maker)

No matter how bad I try to shake it, I can't get rid of my urge to make a game of some sort. Ever since my DexDrive corruptions of my RPG Maker game, I quit for the most part. Screwing around with RPG Maker, RPG Maker 2, and RPG Maker XP were nice... but I'm not sure what else is out there to work with.

So from what few of you still use RPG Maker... which game-maker version felt best to you? RPG Maker 1/2/3, RPG Maker XP, RPG Maker 2003 (legal version, like the one Aznable has) or something else? Anything to make 2D Zelda-esque without major modifications? What about non-RPG Maker programs for making games?

And I wasn't sure if this was supposed to go in RPG Maker General or not, but I stuck it here cuse it had other programs mentioned. If it's meant for General, move it and sorry.
    Keep the change.

      I wish I'd used XP.
But when I got 2k3, XP was showing no signs of coming out.

It's kinda too late for me to turn back at this point.

its a shame I knew about XP's US release for over a year in advance, but was sworn to secrecy.

          Yeah, I... Yeah.
One day, Valk, we'll be at Pavilioncon, and we'll be drunk or something (or maybe just I will be, or.. hell, I don't know)
          and I'll punch you.
and you'll give me the quizzical eye, and wait for a moment, and then go "Oh! That was for XP!"
And we'll both fall over laughing.

For some reason that made me laugh and almost cry.

RPG Maker 2. It takes way longer to do anything. But its sooo worth it.

I would personally say XP or 2, depending on how well you draw on the PC. RPGM2 is great for those of use who are not very good at drawing since it contains a lot of premade models to fool around with, though with XP you can find stuff on the net, it just seems much more of a hassle. So XP would definitly be the least limiting of all, though you'll have to make a lot of content for it. RPGMaker 2 is second least limiting of all of them, as you have seen people have made Action RPGs, Tetris, Normal board games, and all kinds of genres with it (including a TV Show). Of course both of these will have a high learning curve, though it seems if you go here you'll get more help on the console RPG Makers, since most people here use those.

Now that I see you're going for 2D zelda, XP might be a better choice, though many have made Zelda clones with RPGM2. If you like programming there is a development kit for the GBA that is open source called Visual Ham. So you might want to look into that, but it's C/C++ so be ready for that, and it doesn't have nice functions for you, you have to write them and make everything (though there are conversion tools for images). I know a few people here have also used Game Maker with some success so you might look into that as well.

The beta for XMA Express (Microsoft design suite for amateur X-Box 360 and PC games) is coming out in a few hours, and it'll be purely free unless if you want to trade games for 360.

RPGM3 is good if you don't want to spend a ton of hours on a game (I made Fatal Insanity, which is about 8-hours of gameplay if you can stand the dialogue, in approximately 15-20 hours, not counting playtesting and strategy guide design). It's just limited in scope.

Then there's Dark Basic. It's a PC 3D game programming language. I think you could get a copy for about $20-$50 now.

There's no reason to use anything other than XP.

*Looks at site dedicated to console RPG Makers* Does the Pavilion itself suck too?
