While I was watching The Ring 2, I came up with this analogy. Metal Gear Solid : Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty :: The Ring : The Ring 2. In MGS2, it is revealed that the whole game was staged to copy the events of the first game. Similarly, The Ring 2 pretty much copies the pace, events and scares of the first Ring.
Oh, wait, I just came up with another one. Starship Troopers : Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation :: The Ring : The Ring Two. To say why would be kind of a spoiler. Or maybe I'm just crazy.
As a sequel, it's pretty good. It pretty much picks up right away, expecting you to know what's happened in the first one. So when your friend who didn't see the first one goes, "What the hell does that mean?" you can say, "Oh, SNAP, I know what that means!" There are one or two cool moments like that.
And you are much more likely to smirk and say, "Heh, coo'," than to gasp and say OMG, because The Ring 2 is not scary. The scare CONCEPTS are neat sometimes, but they're just not scary. This is coming from someone who could barely get to sleep after watching the first one (though to be fair I was playing Silent Hill 2 around the same time then). Everything that happens has been done. And most of the bizarre-creepiness has been replaced by bizarre-silliness. Stuff that induces not so much shivers as, say, raised eyebrows, or scoffs.
Samara is still cool, but they go overboard with her actual appearance and participation with everything, and some stuff just doesn't make sense. The limit of her powers constantly fluctuates - like, Why couldn't she just do that before? or Why doesn't she just do what she did before again? - which I guess is a symptom of the new writer, along with the lousy dialogue. Towards the end, Naomi Watts triumphantly says either "It's over" or "We did it", I forget which right now.
Still, I don't think it sucked.
Oh. The movie was preceded by a preview of Dark Water. In the preview, a little girl sings "Itsy Bitsy Spider". Yeah.
