    The Ship

Hey guys, a friend of mine told me about a game called The Ship for HL2, and at first glance i thought it was "meh"...but man once i got my hands on the game its probly one of the best fps i have ever played.

A rough story is, a man named Mr. X invited several assassins to his ship to see interesting kills. Mr. X will pay more money if you kill someone with a certain weapon. Anyways, your character will start the game with a quarry (the person they have to kill), and a hunter. You dont know who your hunter is (its random), just like your quarry doesnt know your hunting him. So you go around the ship and look for items, clothes to change your look, and other various items to suit your needs. Every weapon has a $$ amount, that goes up if it isnt used to kill someone. Once someone is killed with that weapon, the money amount goes down to 100$. Basicly, this game isnt about how many kills you have, its about who has the highest money. Now for the twist, while your playing, you also have to balance your needs: eat, drink, sleep, pee, poo, etc etc... this is usually the best time to strike your quarry (sleep is the best because the screen goes black and they cant see whats going on). There is also various other ways to kill your quarry, like using the freezer and locking them in there and such.

All while your on the ship, you cant kill your quarry out in the public. If you do, you may be spotted by security cameras and sent to jail. In jail your hunter is told where you are, so once you are released, it usually means trouble for you. So this means, that you will want to stalk your quarry without him knowing, because if he suspects it, he might kill you.

The graphics and sfx in the game are GREAT! You can tell a lot of work has gone into this game.

An example of one of my kills this morning was: i was stalking my quarry, and he had just ran out of a 3rd class room and across the hall into the bathroom, closing the door behind him. I waited a second or two, then proceeded to follow him, and once inside i saw that one of the stall doors were closed. *evil grin* I opened up the door, found my quarry taking a poop, and wacked him in the face afew times with a shovel and netted myself a great deal of $!

You can check out more about it here: www.theshiponline.com

To sum it up, this game is: The Sims + Hitman + online = The Ship

I have the game too (my in-game name is Ryner. Say hi if you see me, D2), and while I enjoy it a lot and find it to be very addictive, I'm going to counter the original post and point out some negative aspects of the game, just to be the ying to D2's yang.

First of all, the game has a fair share of bugs, flaws, and stability issues. I couldn't get any maps to load after purchasing the game, and after finding the official forums I saw there were a lot of others that had the same problem. A topic about the problem was stickied, and gave three zip files to download, unzip, and then place in the game directory. The problem was solved after doing that, but I really hate having to troubleshoot a game before even playing it. And why those three files, apparently necesary for many to run the game, didn't just come with the initial download is a mystery to me. Some might prefer waiting for the game to become more finalized.

There's some balance issues that bug me as well. The easiest weapon to find in every map is the fire axe, and considering how easy it is to get, it's way too powerful. Something so common should not give you a one hit kill. While it's useless for hunting since you never get much money for an axe kill, it's the second best way to defend yourself other than a gun. Speaking of guns, there's hidden rooms scattered throughout the ship. Some simply have random crates or boxes that have an increased chance of having a good weapon inside, and that's fine. However, there are other hidden rooms that always have a bounty of guns and swords inside. These rooms are easy to access and are pretty well known by many players by now, and a lot of times I see people just automatically going to the same "secret" room over and over again to grab two guns and a sword. It cheapens the gameplay.

Single player is 100% worthless, the AI is just plain terrible and there's no playable mode other than arcade, no story mode or any of the such. Really though, this is a worthless point, as there's no way you'd want to play anything other than multiplayer, but it'd still be nice to have more single player options.

And finally, as of right now it's only available through Steam. 'Nuff said.

Still, for 20 bucks it's hard to not reconmend giving the game a shot. It really is a blast to play. In fact, I cant imagine a game that would be more fun to get a bunch of Pavvies together in, so we can hunt and murder each other with kitchen pots and wallet bombs.

I think 20 bucks is paying far too much; I can't play the game for 10 minutes without being booted.

Walking speed is awful, but I guess they had to do it like that; I like the exploration aspect of it. I'm on often, Mr. Scott Kennedy is my tag.

            My tag is D2king10.

I have to agree about the fire axe, however, i have noticed that more and more, people dont use it because they are learning about the money thing...hell i only grab one until i find a different weapon, even if it does only have 2 star dmg rating.

I have heard about the bugs Ryner, but i guess i am lucky and have never had any problems or booting issues.

And i also agree that pavvies should get together and hunt eachother

              Re: The Ship

Now that I've played for a few hours...

I really love the concept, but the execution really isn't all there. The walking speed is atrocious, I understand they can't have people zooming everywhere, but a nice little boost would really help. As of yet, I haven't experienced any problems, asides from some slight connections issues -- which I really blame on my wireless network. The game is fun, when I'm not being attacked by someone other than my hunter. I don't really know if I dig the needs system thing, they go up a little too fast. So, that's a jumble of my thoughts on the game.

We should all play together sometime, my handle is Caciss.

the needs are a host setting, if they go down fast, thats the servers problem =(
