    Pleasant Surprises

The games you were dubious about until you actually tried them.

I bring this up because I got The Lord of the Rings: The Third Age, and was pleasantly surprised by how decent it actually is(if a little derivative of FFX's battle system).

    Here's my list:

    LOTR: The Third Age
Shadow Madness(Well, I liked the dialogue)
    Legend of Legaia
    Silent Hill(believe it or not)
THQ's WWE games(after Acclaim, I was dubious about any wrestling game, to be honest)
    Arcana
    Armored Core

That's all I can remember at the moment.

Def Jam Fight for New York.
I never played the first game, and with all these rappers in a game i didn't think it'd be that great, just one big cash cow. I kept hearing all these good things about so I finally just went and bought it, and it turned out to be one of my favorite fighting games. Customization of your character's appearance was also really great with so many things to buy.

    Grand Theft Auto 3.
I've played GTA 1 and 2, and just hated them. Ugly graphics, sounds were terrible, and no real point. But GTA3 actually gave an overall story, the city looked more realistic, and the fact that you could run around and do just about anything was really freakin cool. Only other game that seemed like you were running around a real place was Shenmue, but GTA3 was on a much bigger scale.

    God of War.
First seeing pictures of it, it just looked like some other action game with lots of blood and gore. But I got a demo of it in the mail, and I was really surprised to see how fluid eveything ran. graphics were one thing, but the music and responsive controls for the fighting were what made it really fun for me. So I buy the full version, and the narrative turned out really entertaining as well.

Third age is a very nice game. Even if it is mostly the LOTR story it still is 100x better than FFX. The battle system (at least on the GC) is very fluid and an impact when hitting an enemy relly feels and sounds like a hit.

oh, I have lots. but I'll limit myself to 5.

        King's Field
I had never played the series and hardly knew anything about it until Mark from agetec ordered me to play it back in 2000. I quickly became hooked and tracked down KF2 as well.

        Pokemon Snap
Words cannot describe just how stupid this game concept is. but it works. I wish they'd do a sequel.

        Virtual On Marz
The game is garbage if you play it as-is. I mean, absolute bottom of the barrel TRASH. After hearing about how much it sucked, I rented it anyways. and then returned it early. few weeks later in gamestop, I saw the old PS1 twin-stick controller for 8 dollars. immediately little gears began to turn in my head, and I bought it along with MARZ. Just as I thought, the dual stick controller fixed every complaint I had about the game.

        Echo Night Beyond
Looks extremely boring, especially in gameplay videos. but once I played it, it drew me in more than any game I've ever touched.

        Grandia 2
I played the original Grandia, and hated it. I thought Grandia 2 would be the same, but I rented it anyways. I played it for an hour, took it back, and immediately went and bought it instead. Best Dreamcast purchase ever.

          Resident Evil 4
          God of War
Twisted Metal Black (actually it is an opposite situation. More of a disapointment.)
          FF9
          SMT Nocturne
          Wild Arms 4

Offhand, I'd say Wave Race 64. Got it one Christmas alongside Mario 64. Hadn't heard of it until then, and I wound up playing it just to be nice. Long story short, this is one game I definately intend to never get rid of.

Tetrisphere is another. Lots of fun. Got rid of that, though. Not sure what I traded it in for, but I probably regret it. Also a Christmas gift.

Interestingly, Super Mario RPG would probably be on this list. RPGs to me sounded wierd before I played this game, even when reading about it from Nintendo Power (looking at a model of Bowyer didn't help). But then my grandpa got it for Christmas, and I wound up playing it too much.

Unfortunately, I wasn't always lucky at Christmas. *coughvirtualpool64cough*

-World of Warcraft (I bagged on this MMO for nearly 2 years, and while it will never stand against Star Wars Galaxies pre-cu, WoW is still fun for what it's worth.

Tales of Eternia aka Tales of Destiny II
Bought this game, played it for 1 hour then put it on a shelf for almost 2 years. When I finally picked it back up in a fit of boredom I found one of my favorite games of all time. Just great 2D old-school goodness. Hell, I even love the bad voice acting.

                      King's Field II

Didn't want the game but got it as a present. Seeing as at the time I only owned 2 PSX games, I gave it a try. Playing and beating it was one of my favorite gaming experiences ever.

                      Halo
When KOTOR convinced me to buy an X-Box I knew the games I was going to get: KOTOR and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I got Halo on a whim, knowing that it was supposed to be the killer app. Turns out they were right. I ended up beating Halo before I beat KOTOR. I still haven't beaten Buffy.

Diablo. I got it as a discounted PSX game in a bundle of cheap games my dad got when he bought us a Playstation. It was so much fun 2 player that I can forgive the god-awful save/load times.

Bahamut Lagoon. Ha, feeding dragons. And a monster breeder/RPG combo none-the-less! This game was way before its time. (Well unless you count--

--Lufia 2. This little RPG was awesome, and the ending was so sad! Too bad some of those dungeon rooms didn't survive the translation...

This is a first. Most people enjoyed Grandia leaps and bounds more than Grandia 2. I would have enjoyed Grandia 2 more if the final dungeons hadn't dragged on for 5 more hours than it should have.

You're right about the ending. I almost cried. I'd have listed it here, but since I liked the first Lufia, I was expecting it to be good.
