    Rep System

Is there a way to opt out of this entirely? I'd rather people's impression of me be reflected by what I say over someone who chooses to artificially (and anonymously) inflate/deflate my reputation. This make-shift popularity poll only serves to limit minority opinions regardless of their quality.

I don't mind feedback, but damn, taking random abuse from people whose opinions are weighted as much as anyone who might have a thoughtful response is just irritating.

    Just a suggestion, Shard

      Re: Rep System

I think that much less negative rep would be given if it always gave the name of the sender. I personally think you if disagree with someone, you'll want your name shown anyway, and if you're just being an arse, then too **** bad.

Do it the way I did.

        Just ignore it.

While I have seen some of the comments people have left me, I never liked the idea of a reputation system and just pretend it is not there.

In fact, I have left every single comment I wanted people to see in the appropriate thread. I have never given positive or negative reputation to anyone and have no plans of so doing!

I like the idea of opting out. Especially if it does something to the icon, maybe remove the Goblis and Deaths from those people's posts.

So that's two in favor of opting out as an option and one who thinks the system needs reform.

I think we're on to something here...

        Peace.

I really don't take the rep system seriously enough to get upset over it.

It's basically designed for you to see how liked you are, and if I get negative rep, I guess it means somebody dosen't like me.

          No big deal.

It still bothers me when people give anybody anonymous negative rep though, it only reinforces the fact that they're giving it for such a stupid reason that they don't even want to associate themselves with it.

If we were to do this, the people that opted out would have to know that they could still be punished for posting like a dope.

I'm cool with that. I'm not asking to have a free hand and no repercussions. I just don't like the idea of someone formulating an opinion on me, instead of what I've said. I'll always welcome feedback whether positive or negative, if it's something that's been thought out. The anonymous "you suck"s without reason behind them, I can live without.

At the risk of posting like a dope...

Sites without reputation systems seem to do this by having effective moderators.

I am not saying the moderators here are ineffective, I am saying that the average user is not qualified to perform such a moderatorly duty.

And I am fine just continuing to ignore the system.

But does not the fact that I ignore it render any "punishment for dopish posts" made through that system absolutely worthless anyhow?

That's my Buck o' Five worth anyhow.

                Peace.

                  Re: Rep System

The rep system only really starts punishing you when you've gone pretty far into the negatives. The rep system is basically here just for fun. Most of the people that would end up getting so low a rep are dealt with by us admins anyways. I just didn't want a bunch of people opting out of the system and thinking that they could start ignoring message board etiquette, is all.

                    Re: Rep System

I got negative rep because I said I hadn't read any of the Harry Potter books. That doesn't bother me. In fact, it gave me a chuckle. Although, it was also signed, but even if it weren't, I wouldn't have been bothered.

I'm not against the idea of it being optional, though it certainly makes things more difficult to tell someone anonymously what they think. Without the rep system, they're either forced to make a post that everyone sees, or a PM that you will know who sent it. I myself will continue to keep it.

                      Re: Rep System

What the bosses should do is watch the way a person gives rep. If they feel he's using the system in a way they dont like, they should give that person a warning to straighten up and fly right or lose his ability to give rep. Then two weeks later they should just go ahead and take away his rep privileges anyway. That'll teach 'em!

I like the rep system. I mostly just use it when someone says something particularly funny or thoughtful instead of adding a whole post that's just

The rep system lets me make those comments just to that person and makes it easy to know exactly which post I'm referring to. I almost always sign mine and can't remember the last time I gave a negative rep.

The rep system seems fine to me. I don't post often (more now than during the school year), and, like PandaMoe said, sometimes all I have to say is "that was funny" and it doesn't need an entire post. Also, someone else has usually left the before me anyhow. No topic needs a bunch of posts with just that in them. It'd get in the way of actual content.
