    New Member, Old Designer

    Hi everyone.

I first got RPGM 1 when it was first released around 12 years ago.
I made 2 playable games for it, before making a 3rd more impressive one. After a few years I went back and re-made a lot of this 3rd game, refining it for a more enjoyable experience.

Now several years later, my data had been deleted and I am motivated to recreate the entire game from the start. I've already got around 80 hrs. time put into it.

A week or so ago I wanted to see how I would be able to share my game with others once completed and found the RPG maker pavilion.

I don't have a dex drive but plan to get one, as well as put the game in PS3 format. I have a question about the dex drive. In addition to transferring the data online, does it function like a regular memory card as well? Does it let you save more than 15 blocks per card to avoid dual scenario data on RPGM1?

I've browsed around the site a bit, and am a little dissapointed to see lack of reviews for games. Have I missed this somewhere. I have watched clips of Draygone's let's plays. That is really cool of him to do.

I must admit that I thought my RPG would be in a class of it's own, but have seen a lot of what looks like very solid material here. Makes me second guess my own work. I look forward to trying out some of the games once I get a dexdrive.

    About my actual game.

-As I said, this game was previously made, so most the story and lay out is already finished as well as ideas for equipment and such, I just need to put it together and playtest many times.

-There's nothing too innovative about the game, though I've added a few things that should make it interesting. When the game was previously made I had half a dozen people play it and they all enjoyed it very much.

-The game features random battles and is strongly story driven, without too much talk. The random battle dungeons are short however, and you usually move on from them rather quickly. I always found the battling to be enjoyable, but see that a lot of people here prefer no random battles.

-Basically, it's very much a classic straight forward rpg.

-The game probably averages around 15 hours. I thought this was a good length, but see that it may be a little long for an RPGM1 in most peoples opinions. I don't plan to cut it down though. I think it stays interesting throughout.

-On the buildings, I've only made the walls two high, instead of three. If you know what I'm talking about. Do you think this is a very big knock against the game?

-While reading, I came across some things about what not to do in an RPG to make it better, but I've broken some of those rules. The game does have a lot of going out of your way to do something quest, but again, I think they help to build the entire story and are well placed/paced.

-I've only made 1 custom sprite for the entire game. Though I've added an additional 8 from the anime maker portion. I'm correct that the game only allows you to import up to 9 new models? I needed some extra characters for npc's so the extra 8 helped there.

-The game will likely take up 3-4 memory cards. 17-19 blocks of scenario data, 10 for imported characters/save space. 12-15 blocks for system data.

-I've read about the leveling system in RPGM1, that after level 20 something the experience points level off and characters continue to level up the same. I didn't realize this (I don't think I did), but know that previously in the game the battles were very well balanced and continued to give more exp. without any problems.

-I'm working diligently right now, and hope to have the game finished by the end of this month for my own personal use. At which point I will be playing it through as well as a few friends, fixing small errors and tweaking. So sometime after that I should have it ready for this site. I'd be very happy if I could get Draygone to do a play through of it.

Any suggestions or questions? Glad to have found this forum. Not sure how much I'll be posting, but will try to when I feel compelled.

    Sorry for the long post.

    Take care.

The DexDrive cannot hold memory card data. It only allows you to transfer and manage data on memory cards.

      Welcome to the pavilion!

I own RM1, but honestly haven't done much with it.

But your game sounds neat, and good luck re-creating it!

Welcome to the Pavilion! There are a few reviews here stored in odd places... I believe reviewing RPGM games was the specialty of another site, RPG Maker Magazine. At least until a couple years ago. :/

The "a lot of people here prefer no random battles" thing is specifically in reference to RPGM3, not necessarily 1. So I think you'll be okay. If you have a PS3 now, you might not need to get a Dex Drive. You can save those files in PS3 file format/folder structure, submit them here, and someone else here who has a Dex Drive might be able to convert them back to that format if it's really needed.

Most of the reviews here are for games submitted as contest entries. Most actual reviews ARE actually posted at the Mag (rpgmmag.com).

If you have any further info about your game, you can make a topic in the RPGM General forum, as some people might be more apt to look there for game info than in this topic/forum specifically. Any questions that may arise about game mechanics, etc can be posted in the requisite RPGM Workshop forum.

Also, welcome, and enjoy your stay here!

              Thanks for all the replys.

That's what I figured Draygone but sometimes the description on the product info made it sound otherwise.

Thanks for the interest Ωbright. I think it's coming along really nicely. The best way I can judge how good it is, is in my interest to play it, and right now that is high.

It's nice to have found the site Novalis. I should have searched for it a long time ago!

              Sup, Ryner.

Ok, Perversion, that's good to hear. I was mainly worried, cause I saw a few post against random battles, and a few game descriptions touting the fact that their games had none. I was thinking I'd taken the lazy way or something. Random battles in RPG's have always been one of the most irritating things to me too (in certain areas), but I've tried to make all of mine to where they never feel like they're bogging the game down.
Thanks for the other info, I'll continue to lurk around the sight, and hopefully start posting more when I'm further along with my game.

              Take care.

                Re: New Member, Old Designer

Random battles in RPGM3 are often excluded because the battle system is relatively slow, and can often lead to the game being more boring as a result. Even in RPGM1, I won't use random battles. I just use on-screen event battles that the player can avoid if they choose to do so.

                Anyway, sup and good luck.
