    Annoying stuff in RPGs: Discussion

Since we're not allowed to have discussions in the "What annoys you in most RPGs" topic (WHY?), I figure I'd make this topic. At the very least, so I can make some replies of my own.
I disagree, and I loved the triple boss fight at the end of FFIX, and also the mana beast of Secret of Mana! I'm for more bosses, they add a challenge and more of a reward, especially if you're not ready for them.
Actually it was one boss, a chance to save, and then two bosses in a row in FFIX. And I guess there's nothing totally wrong with multiple final bosses. I just don't like it when I lose on the third battle and have to fight through the first battles all over again. To me it's about as annoying as losing to a boss fight that follows a long cutscene. And final bosses can be challenging enough if they're only one. Final Fantasy IV had an awesome final boss, IMO. True, the boss had some cheap tactics (his most powerful attack every turn), but it was challenging.
What I hate in RPGs: Battles. Random, or on-screen that you can choose to engage. There are just far too many in any game to make it fun after thirty hours. Even with games that have nearly perfect battle systems (Dark Cloud 2 and Grandia come to mind), they become boring after awhile to fight battle after battle, and they get so repetitious that I just want to tear my eyeballs out. This is why I rarely finish RPGs.
While I partly agree with you, you have to admit that there'd be a lot of empty space in an RPG if the battles were sparse. Well, unless it was filled with plenty of puzzles, but not a whole lot of people could fill a game with interesting puzzles.
Problem: Excessive boss immunity. Can't cast Sleep on boss. Can't cast Charm on boss. Can't cast Paralyze on boss. Can't cast Confusion on boss. And can't Run if the going gets tough!
I can't imagine how it would effect the story if you ran from a boss fight. Imagine what would have happened if you were able to run from Kefka in FF6. Well, you'd lose. Everything else though, very much true. You should be able to use these spells on bosses. Then there'd be a bit more strategy to bosses besides attack and heal. Of course, we can't allow Death to work on bosses. That would be too easy. We'll just have to make Death actually useful on regular enemies.

This one's certainly fine by me. Go at it, folks. Hell, I'll even contribute:

Balance is a significant issue judging from the great number of RPGs I've played; sometimes enemies are too easy throughout, sometimes enemies are chronically frustrating, and sometimes there are ridiculous strength gaps between one area and the very next. The lattermost bothers me quite significantly, though I've only experienced it a few times.

In most RPGs nowadays, powerleveling allows you to breeze through to the end. It tends to annoy the designer more than the player. Some RPGs go way too far to prevent this, which frustrates the player.

If there's one leveling system that nips these problems in the bud, it's Chrono Cross'. It's uses a special unified level stat that increases by increments of one after every boss battle, thus powering up every character (And there are a hell of a lot of characters in the game). In the case of normal battles, the party's statistics increase slightly after every victory or so. There is a set stat cap that keeps the party's stats from going up any further until a boss is defeated.

The CC system is both very innovative and effective in keeping the battles balanced, not to mention preventing unused/new characters from going sour. The only problem would be the bosses becoming significantly more challenging due to neglecting normal battles. Aside from that, it's a dream system. Well, at least in my opinion.

Why wouldn't discussion about what annoys you in RPGs not be allowed in a topic about what annoys you in RPGs?

Simple: One's for quick reference when designing a game, and the other is for elaboration.

I believe having to look at two topics when one could do the job of both does not qualify as "Simple".

Yeah, well saying "wouldn't not" contradicts your point.

Seriously, I'll prolly merge the topics a bit later. Just need a little backlog.

It doesn't make any sense to stick a bunch of specific rules in a topic, especially when the rules just honestly arent very well thought out. Why do people have to include solutions with the things they hate? Maybe they dont know a good solution.

                Oh, and you're sexy.

I think it would be a good idea to let people post problems without giving solutions. Somebody else might have an idea for how to deal with it. I know there's a lot of things (in life in general) that I hate but couldn't begin to figure out how to fix. But somebody else probably can.

Well, alright, so long as it satisfies everyone.

Also, Ryner, thanks for the compliment.
