    Mortal Kombat reboot.

Posting here, because I have no clue if this is for a movie or a game.

In any case, it seems to be taking a bit more of a realistic approach with the characters. The only person I really recognized was Jeri Ryan (Star Trek Voyager) as Sonya.

    Some violence.

I'm trying to figure out what about any of the things in that trailer is realistic.

      Oh, Mora. Such a dork.

A bit more realistic doesn't mean full on realistic.

      What i noticed:
      -No magic projectiles.
-Reptile's condition is a real life one.
-People do modify their appearances like Baraka with piercings and implants.
-No mention of Outworld, or Shang Tsung stealing souls.

Only things that could be pointed out as non realistic would be how Baraka makes his blades work, and Scorpion's eyes.

Realism? In Mortal Kombat? WHAT?! C'mon. The original game had a four-armed man, people who can shoot magic projectiles and could somehow come back from fatal techniques conjured up from nowhere. I don't care if the movie is unrealistic, just so long as it doesn't deviate horribly from the game *cough* Dragonball Evolution *cough*.
Also, why would you have an action star as an undercover agent? He is easily recognizable. Why did they have him decapitated?
What's the point of having an emergency response system if you can't provoke the wrath of God?

I am sorry, but I am with Mora here. Realistic? How does a derange doctor who somehow altered his body by himself without a team of doctors, suddenly know martial arts.

It's not so much "realistic" as it is "real world," as in they're sticking to things that actually do (or theoretically could) exist in the real world but not things that would necessarily happen in the real world.

I'm thinking it's most likely a viral video miniseries for the next game, like Assassin's Creed Lineage. It's just too far from how movies are ever marketed and I have a hard time believing those actors are likely to appear in a Mortal Kombat movie. Okay, they're barely D-Listers but still. Besides it's pretty much impossible to do any step of a movie without Variety or the Hollywood Reporter discussing it.

Whether it's a movie or a game or something else I'm somewhat interested.

Wow. Ironically, the original MK was almost certainly the most faithful video game to movie adaptation yet created (of course, it wasn't a very good movie, but that's just part of the accuracy, isn't it?), and if this is a movie, it'll be about as faithful an adaptation as the Mario movie was. But one usually doesn't see a 7 and a half minute preview of a movie, so I'm guessing it's a game. After that MK vs. DC nonsense they probably felt the need to start over.

                              Re: Mortal Kombat reboot.

As a short fan-movie, this is awesome. "Fatalities"? Scorpion and Sub-Zero? FINISH HIM? Perfect. Even that fight was really good.

But as a precursor to a new Mortal Kombat project, if that's actually what this is: why make it all about goofy-ass underground gang violence? I thought that Mortal Kombat's ridiculous mythology was its defining quality! I mean, after the severed heads and spinal cords.

Maybe they figure it can be marketable if you take out the crazy Outworld business, but then who are you appealing to? If you ask me, they just gotta commit to the weirdness of their characters and locale. I'm talkin' about some Guillermo del Toro-style confidence. Some kinda ultraviolent, Hellboy, Zenoclash, Labyrinth, Beetlejuice kinda thing. That's what I see.

I don't usually put a lot of stock in Kotaku comments, but:
Mortal Kombat, on the other hand, has ****ing ninjas with magic powers, and wizards from other dimensions. I can't wait until we learn about how Raiden is a top experimental physicist from Japan conducting energy teleportation experiments.
