newcomer with a hello and a few questions

I recently bought rpg maker 3 even though it's pretty old, but it was the newest version, and stumbled across this site as i was looking for tutorials. so i checked it out and noticed that its updates and forum posts were very recent, whereas I believed it would be an old outdated site with minimal activity. I figured I should join a rpg maker community since i originally thought I was one of very few people who used it. turns out there are quite a few.

so just wanted to introduce myself, and I have two newcomer questions.

    1. the sticky on this page says legal versions include rpg maker 1, 2, 3, and xp. what about vx? it's the newest and isn't it legal or is it some modded stolen version of xp? I was considering buying a computer version if I liked making it on the ps2, even though it's 2d graphics.

    2. I really want to have other people play my game and noticed that people were actually hosting theirs for download here for ps2s and ps3s. This is interesting as I thought I'd never be able to distribute my game. Where can I find instructions for how to get my game from my ps2 and uploaded here when I eventually finish it?

    thanks.

Re: newcomer with a hello and a few questions

Welcome to the community! Hope you enjoy yourself here. Yeah, the RPG Makers are still going strong (even the first one still has a ton of fans here), and should continue to have a large fanbase for a long, long time.

    To answer your questions:

    1) Yes, RPG Maker VX is legal (if obtained legally, of course). We don't support it much, which is why we probably forgot to add it to that list. You can discuss it on the site, and I think we do host it if you actually make a game with it. On the other hand, the "2K" series of RPG Maker games is illegal and you can't discuss them on this site.

    2) This thread should answer most of your questions. Basically, you need a Max Drive (I think an Action Replay MAX will also work), which is fairly hard to find, which lets you transfer files between your PS2 and your computer. We have instructions for how to use it somewhere, but it's fairly self-explanatory, and the most important thing to know is to use "Crush" and "Uncrush", not "Copy" or "Move" (which can corrupt your file).

The cool thing is that this same device will let you play every RPGM2/RPGM3 game in our Games section (RPGM1 requires the even rarer Dex Drive for the PS1).

How Badly Do You Want It? (VX Ace) is now available for download! - no outside software necessary.

I forgot to add VX to the list.

We do support it, we just don't have anything for it.

as for the max drive, its really hard to find, aside from the PAL version, which won't work on NTSC PS2s. Other options are the shark port and x port, which are a bit easier to find. we have a save converter in the tools section, so it doesnt really matter what device you have out of the three.

Welcome to the RPG Maker Pavilion.

good to know lol. this is ganna be a huge help if I have questions with rpg maker and for feedback with my game(s). it'll be a while before I even post anything about my game though, soloing making any game takes a while.

in any case it's good to see an active rpg maker community.

Heck, currently, my RPG Maker 3 disc is broken, so I'll be happy to help you with story and battle systems (in RPG Maker 3, anyway.)

I'm working on an RPM3 game right now, actually.

Welcome to the community. It brought a smile to my face when I first read that your expectation was that this site would be old and outdated, and that you were pleasantly surprised that it was still active. This makes this thread kinda the antithesis of an open letter elsewhere.

If you have any interest, I'm currently doing a developer's commentary on my first RPGM3 game, and hosting it online in half-hour or so increments. Might give you some ideas about what the software is and is not capable of doing. Link is currently in my sig.

Oh, I gave you some newcomer rep too. Enjoy your stay!
