Tracy Hathaway said her art teacher at Gavilan View Middle School told her daughter she couldn't draw the American flag, calling the picture offensive.
This is just a load of crap, no two ways about it.

It IS offensive.

Look how many white stripes there are.

Do you see any black stripes?

It's no more or less "offensive" than a confederate flag, an Iranian flag, an Afghan flag, a North Korean flag, or an Iraqi flag...

It's just a flag. Getting in an uproar over it, especially within the nation of its origin, is callow at best...

You'll notice in the video it says "In a picture SIMILAR to this one shown"

Meaning her picture could really have something nasty on it and we'd never know since they're giving us the old bait n switch.

Potentially, but unlikely... no mention of details were made nor any indication of such a thing exists.

And even if there was, free speech is free speech...

I actually laughed at this a bit.

Still, making a big fuss outta nothing. Now, if it was the South Park flag...

Something similar to this happened here in Massachusetts around Christmas time, a kid in school was asked to draw what Christmas meant to her, and when she drew a cross she got suspended.

Rediculous.

Teachers are by and large a liberal bunch, and art teachers are the liberals of the teaching world. When you get that far in either direction of the political spectrum, the real wackadoos start to show up. This teacher obviously being one of them.

I think I can clarify. She drew this:

When she should have drawn this:

See?

It's okay, I can't draw the American Flag either.

No reason to be offended because you suck at art.

Teacher is a moron.

Superintendent is a boor.

Salinas has bigger problems than this, or so I've heard from people who live nearby.

Also, you all need to Learn to Fart.

Knowing how to fart is an instinct; there is no need to learn such a thing.

Somebody failed Sunday school. Cross = Jesus' death. Christmas = Jesus' birth. She should've drawn a homeless woman giving birth to a baby that wasn't her husband's in the back of a barn. Okay to use an episode of Maury for reference.

God and Zeus were bros. They went around impregnating women all the time together disguised as animals or aliens.

This. This story absolutely stinks of hippie. And note the kid wrote "God Bless America" on the flag too, and we all know that the combination of nationalism and piety just pushes a pinko's berserk buttons. And then:

The Hathaways said the issue isn't about race, but that racism has crept into the discussion after the school received more than 200 e-mails and phone messages, most of them containing hateful and racist comments.

So a silly hippie acts stupid, and it brings the right-wing wackos out of the woodwork (though really, it doesn't take much to work them up). Really the principal should have told the teacher she was an idiot to her face, but then that seldom works with idiots anyway, and then the union likely would have made a stink over it too. Got to love the wonder of public education these days.

I think the only thing offensive about this is how the news channel blew it all out of proportion.

200 angry emails = racism? what?

I can believe it. Ever read the comments under the news articles on Yahoo? I swear I lose neurons ever time I do so. I can just imagine the number of unwarrented slurs that were in those emails.

The most popular sites with the easiest ways to comment are full of the biggest arses on the planet.
