Are we experiencing an RPGM renaissance?

Seems as if we are, and at least some of the credit seems due to Valk's front page stuff. That and Thutmose's MAJOR contributions to the community. So what do you guys think?

No, I don't think we're in an RPGM renaissance. A boost in RPGM interest means nothing unless games are actually releasing.

I'm still blown away by Project Kupid. The talk of a USB dexdrive alternative also has me quite excited.

But it doesn't necessarily mean that I'm going to purchase either, or even boot up RPG Maker.

I'm just glad people like Thutmose exist. There's a crowd for what he's creating.

There's a charming vintage-like aspect to the projects. Like when you see people still making software for Mac Classics or something.

I just read that LittleBigPlanet 2 will allow users to make RPGs. If this community will absorb LBP 2, you better believe there will be a renaissance in RPG Making here (considering you guys love to buy the most hyped games).

There is a renaissance. It's all because of me. Bow to me.

And, uh, I would think that if any absorbing were to happen, the larger LBP community would absorb us, not the other way around.

That's a huge generalization, and far from accurate.

I'm still waiting for another RPG Maker to come out.

Or for XP to finally drop in price...

and thus, any chance for a console RPG Maker title in the future just died.

I was hoping the whole "Play, create, share" phase would be incentive enough to bring a new console RPG Maker to the U.S., but I think interest in turn-based RPGs is dying over here. At least, it feels that way, especially compared to the PSone and PS2 days.

I have to agree with Dray. It's not a renaissance until new, good, games start getting released with regularity. We might want to start eating more bran.

Maybe what the community is experiencing is a temporary upswing in activity due to a number of factors (my projects, Dray's LPs, Valks work, etc.). But whether or not this activity and interest can be sustained and results in more game development remains to be seen.

Oh, great. Now I have to learn Microsoft XNA Game Studio, C#, and .NET Framework 2.0.

                        Maybe after Kupid and DDR.

Xbox 360 would probably be the best platform to do this on. It's easier to develop for than other consoles, it's cheaper, and the Microsoft programming languages/frameworks have a lot more documentation and examples than do the other consoles. Plus XNA makes it a lot easier to develop a game and get it onto the console.

I need books, money, artists to produce a slew of high definition 2D graphics assets, musicians to produce game music, Foley artists, a team of debuggers, several years to learn and work, and a gorgeous man to satisfy my every desire. (that last part isn't necessary for creating a new console RPGM; but it sure would increase my enthusiasm )

If anyone wants to front me a few tens of thousands of dollars to start development, then let's do this.

Joking aside, it's possible. Heck, after getting Kupid 1.0 to work (and the mystery project I'm working on now), I'm starting to think I can do anything.

Further, I think that developing a new console RPGM is commercially viable, and certainly technically feasible. There's no reason that one or more people couldn't develop a new console RPG maker in their garage (so to speak), with all the tools and knowledge available today. And with the ability for people to work together over the internet, there's no reason that the programmer(s), artists, musicians, debuggers, what have you, have to be located within the geographical vicinity of one another.

If I could program in C#, I might be so inclined as to put together a very, very, rough proof of concept. But I've only worked with PHP, BASIC, assembly, C, and C++ before (maybe a few others; but still not a bad springboard for learning C#), and don't have that much experience programming for computers (srsly I've got a lot to learn). Plus I'm busy with Kupid, DDR, work, and college. With Kupid & DDR cleared away, though, after finishing development in several months.... maybe it'd be worth my time to investigate this more seriously. I love learning new things, and might actually make some kind of profit (eventually).

HD 2D RPG Maker for Xbox 360, anyone?

Maybe I should make a new thread sometime about this....

What did I tell ya, Valk? Not to say I was right, but...I was right. If what Leish says is true, then Enterbrain has absolutely no reason to develop another console RPG Maker. It's unfortunate, but true nontheless. I least we are getting console RPG creation software, albet it's not from Enterbrain.

I recall you telling me that there's no reason to be remaking the game directories at this point in time.

and you were wrong about that.
