    Subtitles in our games.

This isn't really about reading text because the characters speak a different language, this is about having subtitles ON or OFF in general just because.

For some games, I need the subtitles on because the voices either get too low (if you're not facing the speaking character, or they are further away from you), or maybe the music or background sound effects are too loud and make speech difficult to understand.

Other games though, even if I can clearly hear characters speak, I keep it on. I don't know why I like reading along. Maybe it's the nostalgia of having to read games all the way back to the NES and Gameboy days.

How 'bout you guys? The only time I play with subtitles off these days is when the option isn't there to turn it on in the first place.

I almost always play with the subtitles since I hate missing dialogue.

They're also very helpful for playing Left 4 Dead since the game gets so chaotic sometimes.

I always have them on. Even though it routinely ruins the impact of certain things, seeing it in text before they even say it (mass effect).

I just worry too much about missing stuff.

There's a lot of games where there's no excuse for dialogue to be so goddamned quiet and yet it is. Probably the worst example of this is the Prince of Persia: Sands of Time. And Assassin's Creed. I was constantly cranking up the ****ing volume during dialogue only to pause and turn it back down when LOUD YELLS AND IN-GAME **** started happening, probably damaging the speakers.

It's annoying as hell. Subtitles are winner.

I almost always have them on, except, ironically, during Heavy Rain.

Gotta have them on. My biggest pet peeve in a movie is when people are talking low or inaudibly but discussing plot important things.

yea if there is an option, i will turn them on every time. i think it also goes back to when there weren't voice overs in a game and you had to read. im used to that.

i keep them on and also hate having to **** around with the volume every time someone decides to speak. even if i put my characters ear right in the ****ers mouth it still doesnt boost the volume enough to hear it. as soon as something else happens its like a million tons of explosives just blew my apartment apart.

i just dont get why they do that, its not really that theatrical.

9/10 out of ten, yes. For Final Fantasy XIII? Yes and no. I turned on subtitles only once and that was for voices outside of cutscenes. I was curious as to what NPCs were saying.

I usually turn them on. It does not help when the characters talk mushy and mumble mouthed, and the background music drowns out the dialogue. Maybe the localization teams on imported games should make sure the dialogue is audible when they're working on translation. For Western games, they should know better.
