Let's Play: one of these Genesis games

Let's Play is a concept I've always wanted to bring to the Pavilion, as it's always seemed like a neat forum thing.

For those not acquainted with the idea, it's just posting screenshots and/or video of a game, from start to finish, usually with commentary. Maybe that sounds boring, but I like to think everyone in their lives has enjoyed watching a friend just play through a game, giving commentary and suggestions. RPGs are popular for Let's Play, as they are usually more story driven and interesting to simply watch than other genres.

Many people never owned a Sega Genesis, so I figured I'd do a Let's Play for one of the more obscure (but good) titles. I'm going to do a complete video runthrough, and post it on youtube and dailymotion.

I've boiled it down to 2 choices: Crusader of Centy, and the Sega version of Shadowrun. I'll let you vote on which you'd like me to play through.

Crusader of Centy (AKA Soleil, Ragnacenty)

Crusader of Centy is an overhead action RPG published by Atlus in 1994. It centers on a boy who has just turned 14 and inherits his father's sword. Through mysterious circumstances, he loses his ability to speak to humans in exchange for the ability to speak with animals.

The story follows the boy in his quest to both gain back the ability to speak to humans, and vanquish the monsters that have spread across the land. The problem is, he is challenged by the idea that maybe the hostilities between humans and monsters are not what they seem. There are also a number of curious references to the Bible.

You could call it a simple Zelda clone, and you wouldn't be far from the truth. Instead of items, though, the boy befriends animals who help him by imbuing his sword with different abilities. Furthermore, you can combine two abilities to create unique combinations. The game is shorter than any Zelda, but that helps to keep it interesting!

It has a soft spot in my heart for the goofy graphics, neat puzzles, interesting animal combinations, lighthearted music, and a story that actually tries something a little different.

    Shadowrun (Genesis/MegaDrive version)

Shadowrun is another overhead action RPG, based on the tabletop RPG of the same name. When the shadowrunner (covert mercenary) Michael is killed in a botched mission, it's up to his brother, Joshua, to head to Seattle, find out what went wrong and seek revenge.

The Shadowrun universe is one heavily inspired by the cyberpunk style created and popularized by the novel "Neuromancer", and the fantasy of pretty much everything in D&D. Corporations sabotage each other for control of the ruined United States in a future where guns and cyberspace coexist with magic and mysticism.

Basically, imagine if a bunch of nerds sat down and watched Blade Runner, and after it was over they said "That was great but it needs DRAGONS."

Joshua can choose to be a street samurai, Matrix (cyberspace) hacker, or a shaman, and can also team up with 2 other shadowrunners to make up for the weaknesses of his class. Gameplay consists of following clues, running missions for money, and wandering around the oppressive and occasionally hostile city streets.

The Genesis version is much different from its SNES counterpart, as the Sega version has much more of a sandbox style. It's got fun gameplay, good characters and story, and just a really cool atmosphere and setting. It also has more opportunity for suggestions and audience input than Crusader.

So there you have it. I'll run the poll until sometime next week, where I'll start my first Let's Play. Even if you don't want to watch me play, just vote on which one you'd possibly find more interesting!

Shadowrun's a good game but not very fun to watch because of the early mission grinding you're required to do in order to not be slaughtered by wandering thugs and zombies.

Crusder of Centy is such a good game. I've beaten it probably, 4 times, and have yet to get tired of it.

Much of this I would fast forward through to get to more interesting styled shadowruns.

I'd kinda like to see Shadowrun, because I've only ever played the SNES version. Aside from the boxart, Crusader of Centy does look charming.

I'm a huge fan of the LP forums at somethingawful, so I'm kind of excited somebody wants to bring Let's Plays here. I almost started an LP of Ultima 8 a while back, but got too busy. Maybe I'll bring it to the pav instead.

Looking forward to whatever you pick!

Watching let's plays is one of my secret hobbies. That said I think the first game looks more entertaining from an audience point of view.

                This.

I loved the SNES Shadowrun (the pen and paper RPG is the only other one I ever got involved in besides dabbling in D & D), and would enjoy seeing the Genesis one "in action" so to speak.

Not familiar with either of those.

I say Shadowrun though. The other game just looks like yet another JRPG. I'm not overly familiar with Shadowrun, but the universe is very... um different. So it would probably feel a lot fresher and more original to me than the other game.

For it's time, Crusader of Centy was pretty unique: it was a Sega Genesis RPG (rare enough as is) that might have passed for an SNES game. The bright colors and goofy style are kind of reminiscent of something like Pocky and Rocky.

That being said, if there's enough interest in this first Let's Play, I'll do the other game too, eventually.

I'll cut off the voting on Sunday night, have the first video up on Monday or Tuesday.

Crusader of Centy ahead by 2. Gonna leave 4 more hours til the one in the lead becomes the official let's play topic.

I'd watch a Shadowrun LP, even though I have it and play it every now and then. I'd still watch to see if you'd play the game any different than I would. And yeah, I would kind of skip past the early courier/escort runs that I usually do at the very beginning. I spent around an hour or two just doing those in Redmond Barrens before I even picked up Michael's stuff from Stoker. Mostly for the karma points, if anything else.

That and it's not like you can afford the package until you do so. Regardless, once you get out of the Barrens every other mission will kill you instantly so building your character up is mega important.

The SNES version was the same once you were captured and put in that trash yard. If you wanted to get out you had to beat the arena which required training in that little side area that constantly spawned hitmen.
