    Day/Night systems: Your thoughts?

Sorry if this is in the wrong forum.

What is your opinion on games with a day/night system, and a time system also? (Think Harvest Moon or Zelda: MM. I'm talking about time systems within the game, not games like Animal Crossing that run in our time).

Unless it becomes a nuisance, I generally enjoy games with a sense of time and day/night. The only time it gets annoying is hen it has no impact on the gameplay for me, and when it really hampers the gameplay (I'm looking at you, Star Fox Adventures).

I hate the day/night cycles in zelda. too fast.

    shenmue had perfect day/night cycles.

What's the deeeeal with this day/night system? I mean It's dark, it's light. Just pick a time and stick with it!

I've not really seen a day/night system work to well in any game. Either it was annoying (ala brave fencer musashi, majoras mask) or barely worth the trouble/confusing) (ala castlevania 64, ogre battle 64)

also WHAT A HORRIBLE NIGHT FOR A CURSE!
Find a dog, honk it's nose. If you are bothered by this sentence. I guess you're just not cool enough for the noses.

Animal Crossing uses it well. But all of my neighbors keep yelling at me if I don't play the game every five minutes.

For the most part they aren't used too well. Like in most RPGs where you travel from point A to point b on the world map and several days pass by within maybe 10 minutes then when you reach point b only a day passed. But then again those aren't the kind of games to talk about when it comes to day/night stuff. Usually, if there is nothing different that happens at different parts of the day then it is pointless.

He specifically said he wasn't talking about Animal Crossing.

              Re: Day/Night systems: Your thoughts?

As long as it serves some purpose, like making different enemies appear or something, I like it.

The rate of change in Morrowind was pretty much spot on, but the cycle was under utilized. You actually had to accomplish certain quests within a certain time-period, and some quests could only be accomplished at a certain time of day. But other than that (which is really pretty minor) and the affect it had on vampires and werewolves, it was pretty much pointless.

However, there are mods that give NPCs schedules, so they are in different places during the day, and shops have actual operating hours. So you couldn't walk into town at 3 a.m. and see people wandering the streets like they were at noon the previous day, or go into the local blacksmith at midnight and ask him to get that axe head out of your shield.

Oblivion does it quite well, Especially having to sneak around at night to catch certain NPCs doing certain things, quests or otherwise.

They are a neat effect over-all. As long as they aren't done like Castlevaina 2 I am fine with them.

Twothorp was in immense pain. The blisters did not care.
