What's the point of a quicksave?

It's not a permanent save and if you turn off the DS you lose it. What's it's purpose?
The Cyclops having only one eye, needed to seek shelter from the harsh sun. The shadow cast by the spheres gave him temporary respite.

If you need to stop playing RIGHT NOW but the game doesn't give you an option to do a proper save.

It's a way to cheat in western RPGs.

Save before doing anything. Dont like the results of one of your actions? Reload.

Yep, Fallout 2. I always go to Reno and pickpocket the bouncers for their guns, easy way to make money.

It's a big pet peeve of mine. What's the point of having games like Oblivion or KOTOR, where freedom of character is a main selling point, if you only have to live with the consequences of your actions when you feel like it?

                  Censor yourself?

Kind of like the Auto-Revival Booths in BioShock. They ****** me off too. What's the point of dying when you came back to life, with everything as it was, a few seconds later.

I blame it on bad game design.

Quick saves erase the moment you load them. Completely different from a regular save.

But what about games where you can save anytime anywhere you want, quicky?

A different beast alltogether. I hate it and wish it never existed.

As for the "temp quicksave" I guess it's for someone who has to stop playing the game right that second. But it shouldn't delete when you turn off the system. They should delete when they are loaded. I think the concept makes total sense.

This is also a game breaker in first person shooters. I always laughed when people said that Prey was too easy because you couldn't die but all the game did was offer an alternative to rapidly pressing f6/f8.

Anyways most gamers are put off by permanent actions which is why I love roguelikes. If you die, your save is deleted so every action actually has some weight to it.

This could be fixed if choice driven games actually had consequences to the action. No matter how evil you are in an RPG, you can still freely wander around towns and talk to people. If you have a good character but an evil action nets a better reward, you can take the evil action with no repercussions.

I'm waiting for the developer that has the balls to make a game where evil characters are actively shunned by society and hunted down and good characters making ridiculously evil choices go through mental breakdowns like immense guilt. I'm talking about straight up World of Darkness morality system here.

They're a good idea for games like FF3 on DS. Since you can only do a normal save on the world map, if you're in the middle of a dungeon and have to stop then you can quicksave and get back to it later. It disappears when you load it once specifically to avoid people using it as infinite do-over.

And where'd you get that you lose it if you turn off the DS? At least that's not how it works with FF3. That would make it pretty useless.

Speaking of which, FF3's save system was ridiculously retarded because the dungeons were much longer than in FF1 and FF2. I had to actually set aside 3 hours just to play through the final dungeon because you can't save at all and you get stuck in the last area after beating Xande.

Well, what ABOUT them? That's not what IRC made this topic about.

And quick saves do disappear when you load them. That's what we're talking about. Like when you close your DS while playing a game.
