A question about reputation points. Updated first post.

A lot of people are maxed out with goblis. A lot of people don't have any hope of ever catching up to those people, especially since the people with maxed goblis keep getting points. add to this, rep points have seemingly lost all meaning. They're rarely given out now, and people with maxed out points tend to not care one bit about them anymore.

So I'm asking who here thinks we should reset the system.

If we did this, we would add a ton of new rep level messages, lower the amount of points people can give, and make it a lot harder (but a bigger deal) when someone gets a new gobli.

If we reset, I would also preserve people's current gobli amount in some way, possibly in a new profile field that only admins can edit (we'd put your old gobli count in there, I think), we'd also let everyone see their entire point history one last time before the reset, so they could save all their old point comments.

I want to make it clear that this is not a vote. if even one person is seriously against a reset, we will not do it.

UPDATE: We no longer need to do this to clear up space. I've been able to trim the database down considerably (it was 1GB, it is now 370MB) so it's not a problem anymore. If this changes the way you feel about a reset, then go ahead and post saying so.

Weeeellll, I only have 2 Goblis anyway.............So I pretty much have to say yes we should. Just because I wouldn't suffer a big loss since 2 Goblis isn't really that great.

That's just me, though. I give rep as much as I can, and when someone gives back, I appreciate it.

I think you should be able to trade in your Goblis for prizes. Like being able to kick IRC in the balls: 3 Goblis. Touching my balls: 10 Goblis.

im not fond of a reset, people now a days have to earn it the same as everyone else. those whove been here longer and post more/contribute more, generally have more goblis. when i returned here in september of last year i had one gobli and a minimum amount of rep yet ive done alright and managed to build up to 500ish. new members are not doing to badly with rep, they just need to contribute more like everyone else has - sometimes they will get rep, other times they wont, depends on who is giving out rep.

how it is now works, though a few more levels of rep wouldnt be too bad (the platinum gobli was mentioned as a possibility for those who have tons). that would give more well endowed folks an incentive to care more. people may not give out much rep, but those who have tons of rep still give it, and some never really used or cared about rep to begin with.

rep shouldnt be the focus at the pavi, and too much drama comes from negative reping or some people getting more rep then others. if we are going to change/reset the system then we should just scrap it all together, otherwise lets leave it alone.

New levels are not possible. I've said this before.

One thing I'm sure of, if a reset did happen (which doesnt seem likely now), we would completely get rid of negative rep.

One big reason I would like to do a reset is to clear up some space in the forum's database, which is currently over 1GB in size.

removal of negative rep? that is acually a good idea, it would greatly reduce the drama and would let rep be focused in a better direction, a lighter rep system would make it feel more meaningful and build up much slower.

ill take that reset if neg rep goes away.


1gig? damn thats a lot. a huge majority is posts id wager, i dont think changing the rep system will free much space, but if we are in a squeeze then every little bit helps. non use accounts consume a lot of space, so when you free them up we should see an improvement. avatar storage (ones you arnt using but dont delete it) also eat room.

one thing ive learned in my internet time. even if you reset things, they will revert back to how they where over a short period of time. level playing fields dont exist, in 2 years your going to have the same rep spread as you have now, maybe a few others will be higher but if you left it alone they would of gotten there just the same.

this isnt to say i dont support a reset, but to say dont hope for a reset thinking the grass will be greener with everyone on the same level.

If you DO eliminate all current rep (I'm not 100% against it), you should make something in the Pav Greatest Hits forum (the most logical spot, I would think) indicating everyone with a gold gobli (or whatever amount you see fit) or higher, in numerical order...maybe just make a thread with screen captures of the rep screens or something. Or just add the new thing in the profiles as you mentioned.
