A question about reputation points. Updated first post.

A lot of people are maxed out with goblis. A lot of people don't have any hope of ever catching up to those people, especially since the people with maxed goblis keep getting points. add to this, rep points have seemingly lost all meaning. They're rarely given out now, and people with maxed out points tend to not care one bit about them anymore.

So I'm asking who here thinks we should reset the system.

If we did this, we would add a ton of new rep level messages, lower the amount of points people can give, and make it a lot harder (but a bigger deal) when someone gets a new gobli.

If we reset, I would also preserve people's current gobli amount in some way, possibly in a new profile field that only admins can edit (we'd put your old gobli count in there, I think), we'd also let everyone see their entire point history one last time before the reset, so they could save all their old point comments.

I want to make it clear that this is not a vote. if even one person is seriously against a reset, we will not do it.

UPDATE: We no longer need to do this to clear up space. I've been able to trim the database down considerably (it was 1GB, it is now 370MB) so it's not a problem anymore. If this changes the way you feel about a reset, then go ahead and post saying so.

im not fond of a reset, people now a days have to earn it the same as everyone else. those whove been here longer and post more/contribute more, generally have more goblis. when i returned here in september of last year i had one gobli and a minimum amount of rep yet ive done alright and managed to build up to 500ish. new members are not doing to badly with rep, they just need to contribute more like everyone else has - sometimes they will get rep, other times they wont, depends on who is giving out rep.

how it is now works, though a few more levels of rep wouldnt be too bad (the platinum gobli was mentioned as a possibility for those who have tons). that would give more well endowed folks an incentive to care more. people may not give out much rep, but those who have tons of rep still give it, and some never really used or cared about rep to begin with.

rep shouldnt be the focus at the pavi, and too much drama comes from negative reping or some people getting more rep then others. if we are going to change/reset the system then we should just scrap it all together, otherwise lets leave it alone.

One thing I'm sure of, if a reset did happen (which doesnt seem likely now), we would completely get rid of negative rep.

One big reason I would like to do a reset is to clear up some space in the forum's database, which is currently over 1GB in size.

removal of negative rep? that is acually a good idea, it would greatly reduce the drama and would let rep be focused in a better direction, a lighter rep system would make it feel more meaningful and build up much slower.

1gig? damn thats a lot. a huge majority is posts id wager, i dont think changing the rep system will free much space, but if we are in a squeeze then every little bit helps. non use accounts consume a lot of space, so when you free them up we should see an improvement. avatar storage (ones you arnt using but dont delete it) also eat room.

one thing ive learned in my internet time. even if you reset things, they will revert back to how they where over a short period of time. level playing fields dont exist, in 2 years your going to have the same rep spread as you have now, maybe a few others will be higher but if you left it alone they would of gotten there just the same.

this isnt to say i dont support a reset, but to say dont hope for a reset thinking the grass will be greener with everyone on the same level.

If you DO eliminate all current rep (I'm not 100% against it), you should make something in the Pav Greatest Hits forum (the most logical spot, I would think) indicating everyone with a gold gobli (or whatever amount you see fit) or higher, in numerical order...maybe just make a thread with screen captures of the rep screens or something. Or just add the new thing in the profiles as you mentioned.

I finally got my gold one a few weeks ago and now have two gold ones (yay) but if it'll help clean things up then I don't mind.

I'm sick of people always referring to rep when they mention me, so yeah, go for it. Whoever has the highest rep can be IRC's new enemy. I will also be sure to mention their high rep all the time, until they're sick of it, too.

And could we do something about the rep limitations? I think the need to spread some should be timed. Sometimes I go a while without repping anybody and when I try to I can't because whoever it is was one of the last ones I did. I don't want to give out random rep just to do the one I want. And if I try I end up hitting the daily limit before it'll let me rep the one post I actually wanted to. :lol It's a madhouse I tell ya.

If for example 5 regular Goblis equals 1 Gold pointwise, every time you get a fifth regular one they should disappear and be replaced by a Gold one. And have one big platinum (or whatever) one when somebody reaches the max limit.

A lot of people are proud of the points people have given them, and presumably would want to keep working from the total they've already got. I personally would rather keep working from my total. Besides, we all know Reputation shouldn't be taken too seriously, and I feel it should be more based around fun and connectedness rather than fairness.

I don't really see why Maxed-out Goblis is a big problem, or the big deal that "new rep messages" would be. I do like the idea of No Negative Rep and personally I'd like to see a change in the "You've given rep to this person too recently" system, but couldn't that be done without a reset?

Overall I'm weakly opposed to the Rep Reset. If there's overwhelming support for the reset, I don't want to hold it back.

I guess that's with one caveat--I don't know how the rep system worked before I got here. If people were ABLE to give out more rep per day or something in the past (i.e. the rules were different, not just the habits), then I switch my opinion to being in favor of the reset.

Why cant we simply display a numeric value instead of Gobli's? That way we never max out.

A second option: The stats area to the left is able to support a bar 170 pixels wide, why not make a bar that fill up by 1 pixel every 100 or 200 reps, that way the bar will last up until someone gets 17,000 or 34,000 rep points, this will also take 170 images that are about 800 bytes, for a total of about 136KB

I also think unlimited reps by admins should be taken away, they have so much rep right now anyway because they rep each other all the time
