    M rated games plummet

    http://kotaku.com/353775/mature-game...-50-since-2005

Doesn't really surprise me...I also blame Nintendo. If you are developing a mature title for the Wii or DS, it's simply not going to sell. I was hoping No More Heroes would turn this trend, but it debuted at #13 or so...so who knows.

We're entering another squeaky-clean age w/ a few acceptions. I like games of all sorts, but I do miss having more mature offerings.

      That's just by relation though.

      It's not "Good games".

      It's ALL GAMES

      Meaning ALL of the crap.

Wii/DS especially gets the blame because of how cheap it is to develop for. Ubisoft mini-game spam didn't help anyone.

Plus those odd $20 bargin bin games you find lying around.

It's not Nintendo's fault developers try to make a quick buck by making a crap game.

I was hoping No More Heroes would turn this trend, but it debuted at #13 or so...so who knows.
It came out in 2008, like, a month ago, So I have no idea what you are trying to say with this comment.

There might have been fewer M games, but many of last years best were Mature: Mass Effect, CoD4, Bioshock, Orange Box.

I was with you up to here. Nintendo holds the license to its own hardware, if they don't want a game released on the console, they say no. That problem spelled the doom of Atari back in the 80s and it wasn't until Nintendo came along with its quality mandates that the console industry was reborn.

So, yeah, Nintendo can't make third party developers make quality games, but they can prevent them from releasing crap on their own console. (Not that I'm characterizing any game as crap, I haven't played any Nintendo games since the SNES.)

Ryner has a very good point. Orange Box and Bioshock are easily two of my favorite games.

              You're being silly Kire.

There may be less mature games out now, but most mature titles these days are pretty damn good.

We're getting less crap like True Crime, and Bloodrayne. The crap fest has switched gears to minigame fests.

And the M titles that are actually out for Wii tend to do pretty well, such as the Resident Evil games. And for a niche title like No More Heroes, #13 is pretty good. Its not like it had an exponential budget like Call of Duty 4 or something.

50% less titles doesnt mean anything. its clear that gaming companies want to attract younger audiences and targeting not just teens is the way to go. again, to point out the same as others here, a spammed market is also to blame for this.

m rated games are a niche market, so its going to naturally remain small. there is far more teens and younger buying games then adults so it makes sense that the games developed would heavily reflect that.

what would be more beneficial for me would be to see a sales chart to comparatively see what ratings people are most buying and see if it reflects the same change as this chart.

An unseen factor might be ratings creep. Things that were Rated M 10 years ago, may go through with a T now.

I mean, Parasite Eve and Manhunt are both sporting M labels. I don't think you can say it carries the same weight.

thats very true. times are changing, however dont forget that the chart is reflective of 3 years ago, not 10, so the time change wouldnt really be much of a factor here.

I disagree with this slightly. Every study I read shows that most gamers in their twenties and thirties nowadays.

And can I tell you that personally, that I purchase an immense amount more of games than back when I was a kid.

Hell, I usually pick up around three games a month now.

Quality E games are at an all time high though- Super Mario Galaxy, every Zelda game, every DS game.
