    New RPG maker user

well I picked up my copy of RPG maker 3 the other day, and just fired it up for the first time. What a wondeful idea, and I think I might be hooked.

First a little about myself. I'm 26 and have been into video games for quite some time, ever since my Atari 800xl. currently, I have close to 80 game systems (if I'm not there yet), and get awfully obsessive about them. I'm a web programmer by trade, which is a very recent change, as I've just left the us navy. My other major hobby would be R/C--mostly 1/10 onroad cars these days.

Anyway, I've recently discovered that my ps2 was good for more than just sitting around, so I've dumped quite a bit of effort into making it useful so I can play all those ps2 exclusives--like rpg maker. I bought rpg maker loose, so stumbling around for documentation, I found there was still a community for it here. I'm thrilled.

    -----------------------------------
and of course what intro post would be complete without my 'grand rpg maker idea'? I have no idea how much of this is possible, since I came here hunting for documentation (and now have a bit to wade through), but here goes:

rather than another RPG, ps2 really needs an economic simulator worse, so my idea involves using rpgmaker to create a universe where the hero--a town merchant, tries to strike it big by traveling and buying and selling goods. PS2 has only one similar game that I can think of, the unfortunate big mutha truckers... But I'm thinking of something that plays closer to ftl's sundog.

He'd start with a dog in his party--which is much more useful at attack than he is (though it'd still be wise to run from most of the infrequent battles). But after a while, I'm hoping it's possible for him to hire on more powerful party members allowing further exploration. I'm also hoping certain townspeople could be 'bought' to populate his home town and give it certain buildings/features. (it would start small and mostly empty, but hopefully would gain features to produce its own goods as well as ease travel). maybe once the adventure party levels up, there could even be a few treasure dungeons. The real trick is an event driven semi-random economy, that I'm hoping to fire up with the enter town event.

so far, my biggest disappointment is the lack of horse/mule characters. I was hoping I could use these to limit how many goods he could buy.
    ----------------------------
but anyway, that's my 'grand idea'. in the mean time I'm going to sit down with the documentation, and try to figure out how to use your games. (I do have ARmax software somewhere around here)

I actually read through that while waiting for my disc to come in the mail. Which is why I already have a copy of ARmax. The software isn't a huge fan of me or my system, though. It won't take my generic 64mb memory card (8mb card works fine), and it has a habit of freezing randomly and often. It also does a variety of other weird things. I actually got almost half of a game on it just before it froze up last time.

But other than my bad memory cards and possibly buggy copy of armax, I'm doing well. It's the armax software that I need, right? in the guide section, it seems to call it 'max drive', but armax seems about like a deluxe version of the same thing. I've got a funny setup, so I'll try it in a more standard way once I get around to it.

Yeah, the Action Replay Max contains the same software as the max drive (with a few additions).

            Welcome to the community

I don't know why its freezing up, but perhaps you should return the disc and get another copy, it may just be a bad disc(like you said).

Theres a specific procedure for transferring data from what I understand, so make sure you follow it exactly otherwise youll end up with freezing/corrupted data/etc...

Hey, welcome to the pav. I hope you can learn a lot and enjoy your stay. Feel free to ask questions.

Also you game idea sounds interesting. It could work with 3, but you'll have to learn to get by some annoying limitations. Welcome Reaperman.

well I'm up and running now. ARmax doesn't like to run of the HD it seems, making it kind of a pain to transfer games (really rpg maker should have its own usb saving).

but I'm up and running. I played a bit of 'A Series Aside' which gave me some ideas about what non-rpg material can be done with the game. And thankfully the old wireless keyboard seems to work fine.

there do seem to be a lot of limitations in the engine, but in the game I played, I've noticed that much can be done to get around some of them. Granted I'll have to really look at what can be done, as this engine seems to be built for a very specific type of rpg, and is pretty far from what I'm looking at doing. I have a feeling that I'm going to be working with the 'treasure' items a lot, to separate commerce items from standard ones. And just starting out, I have no clue how possible city growth is, but maybe there's a creative way to swap in new cities, and flags to set for each building/person that gets thrown into the upgrade.

Welcome, be sure to check out the individual game forums for plenty of tips for RPGM3.

I assume there's tips there, I've never actually looked at the forum.

                    Re: New RPG maker user

Thank you for playing A Series Aside. Yes, there are quite a few limitations inherent in the software, but as you've already seen, these can be worked around, to an extent. For specific game ideas and questions, I would recommend Ryner's above advice, and also browse/post in the RPGM3 Workshop and RPGM General forums for specific questions and/or game ideas you may have.

I would also recommend trying Dreadlord (I think that's what it's called). Even though I've yet to play it, it's apparently an empire-building game for RPGM3, so you might get some ideas from that as well (I'm not sure if it's a full game or a demo, though).

As for a "random" economy, do a search in the RPGM3 workshop for either the term minigames or any combination of the words "pseudo random number generator," and you will probably also find some useful info. There is actually a topic on the first page right now concerning "randomizing" things in RPGM3. If you have any questions about anything, feel free to post in the workshop forum, and you will generally get a fairly quick response.

As for your 64 MB card, I would HIGHLY recommend not using a possibly unstable 3rd party card on which to store any game data you are creating. Buy an official Sony-branded memory card (they are only $20 used at Gamestop) and you'll save yourself from some (possible) frustration in the future if the game you've spent 30 hours making gets corrupted.

If you see something in A Series Aside that might be able to help you in your own game-making process, feel free to go into the edit screen to see what I did (although most of it will probably not make much sense), and if you have questions, send me a PM and I'll try to answer them.

Lastly, in case you were not aware, the item carrying limit per playable character is only 10, so this might put a damper on your commodities and trading idea...although you are better off using treasure items anyway, as they are easier to track (with both variables and with command code that will determine if you are in possession of a particular treasure item, and will then execute the following code accordingly).

                    Oh, and welcome!

10 items? so much for using this for dungeon crawlers.

I know it's an older piece of software, but I've been looking at rpg maker 2 videos on youtube. It seems like a cleaner engine, travel looks to be much faster. would this be a better choice for me?

Yeah, even though RPG Maker 2 is older it's much more sophistocated and flexible. Naturally that means there's a lot more to learn but if you're willing/able to tackle that it's well worth it especially if you want to make something different from the traditional RPG genre the Makers are geared towards.

                          And welcome.

Hey! Let me be one of the few who is welcoming you very much later then I normally would. It's cool to see someone playing the game, and I think your idea is actually pretty original and cool. (we get alot of cliche games, but then again, it's hard not to be cliche today.) Another RPGM3 game I would recommend would be Whispers in the Woods, which isn't your traditional RPG, but an awesome example of what you can do with the software. I hope that you enjoy being here. If you need any help, hop over to the RPGM3 Forums. Some of the members who are really good at it are Perversion, Pagerron, JPS,, hitorogoshi (namewrroong) and Obright (who did another awesome game called "Ursus Quest: Tree of Life) (yes, I KNOW i am whoring out games, but it's too easy too with so much talent!) I know they wouldn't mind you asking for help if you need it.

                            So, WELCOME.

Sorry it took me so long to post, I'm back in school again that takes alot of my time now :P

Welcome to the Pav Reaperman. You've basically got all the advice you need to start out here in the Pavilion, but I'll recap to make this post have a point

If you have a question about RM3, just head over to the RPG Maker 3 Workshop forum, and do a search for any threads on you question. No threads that cover your question? Then make your own! Chances are you'll have the answer within the hour, most of us don't do much in our free time

If you have a question about RPG Makers in general, then you head to the RPG Maker General Forum, obviously.

Well I guess that about covers it. Have fun and I hope you stick around awhile!
