well I picked up my copy of RPG maker 3 the other day, and just fired it up for the first time. What a wondeful idea, and I think I might be hooked.
First a little about myself. I'm 26 and have been into video games for quite some time, ever since my Atari 800xl. currently, I have close to 80 game systems (if I'm not there yet), and get awfully obsessive about them. I'm a web programmer by trade, which is a very recent change, as I've just left the us navy. My other major hobby would be R/C--mostly 1/10 onroad cars these days.
Anyway, I've recently discovered that my ps2 was good for more than just sitting around, so I've dumped quite a bit of effort into making it useful so I can play all those ps2 exclusives--like rpg maker. I bought rpg maker loose, so stumbling around for documentation, I found there was still a community for it here. I'm thrilled.
-----------------------------------
and of course what intro post would be complete without my 'grand rpg maker idea'? I have no idea how much of this is possible, since I came here hunting for documentation (and now have a bit to wade through), but here goes:
rather than another RPG, ps2 really needs an economic simulator worse, so my idea involves using rpgmaker to create a universe where the hero--a town merchant, tries to strike it big by traveling and buying and selling goods. PS2 has only one similar game that I can think of, the unfortunate big mutha truckers... But I'm thinking of something that plays closer to ftl's sundog.
He'd start with a dog in his party--which is much more useful at attack than he is (though it'd still be wise to run from most of the infrequent battles). But after a while, I'm hoping it's possible for him to hire on more powerful party members allowing further exploration. I'm also hoping certain townspeople could be 'bought' to populate his home town and give it certain buildings/features. (it would start small and mostly empty, but hopefully would gain features to produce its own goods as well as ease travel). maybe once the adventure party levels up, there could even be a few treasure dungeons. The real trick is an event driven semi-random economy, that I'm hoping to fire up with the enter town event.
so far, my biggest disappointment is the lack of horse/mule characters. I was hoping I could use these to limit how many goods he could buy.

but anyway, that's my 'grand idea'. in the mean time I'm going to sit down with the documentation, and try to figure out how to use your games. (I do have ARmax software somewhere around here)
