    Strategy Guide?

When was the last time you bought a Strategy Guide for a game?

The last ones I remember buying were for FFX-2, yet I couldn't even force myself to beat that game even though I had a book right there in front of me telling me step-by-step how to do it. The other one was for Star Ocean: Till The End of Time because I was madly in love with The Second Story.

But I haven't had the itch to buy a guide with a game since then. It seems kind of pointless. I can usually figure the stuff out on my own, and have more fun that way or I just go to GameFaqs.

There's really no reason to buy them in the internet age.

      Re: Strategy Guide?

I bought strategy guides, mostly so I could see what I could earn, considering most people don't post videos/pics of those highly sought after codes and such.

I bought one for Oblivion, but seeing as how I've only played the game for a few hours, it was kind of a worthless investment.

As Den and I discussed in another thread, I was hoping it would have the entertaining just-to-read writing style of the Morrowind guide, but alas, it seemed pretty bland and dry. I actually sat and read the Morrowind guide quite a few times without even having the game turned on, just for the sheer enjoyment of reading it, and also to make decisions on how I was going to progress in the game (how I wanted to develop my character(s), which houses and guilds I wanted to join, etc). The fact that the guide only cost about the same, if not $5 more than other standard guides, and was probably over 3 times the size, made it a worthwhile investment over constantly looking things up/printing things out from the internet.

The last guide I bought was a guide for Jade Coccon which I got for half price. Actually, I think that's about the only guide I ever bought, I usually don't rely on them and just go to GameFAQs instead.

They're helpful because they usually have lists and other such information which you can have in front of you while you're playing, which isn't always the case with looking up FAQs on a computer. But I usually don't like them because most of the information is stuff that an observant player will learn anyway.

I've been involved in a recent discussion over at GameFAQs the last few days about guides, I don't feel like typing the stuff again, so here's a link.

last time I got a strategy guide was for Dragon Quest VIII. it was the smart decision, considering how huge the game was.

I think the last one I got was for GTA: San Andreas. I think the most useful thing in there was the maps for finding the gang tags and other collectible stuff. It didn't really help that much, though, because I kept missing 1 or 2 things along the way, and you don't get anything if you don't find every last one.

Exactly. When I was a kid I used to buy them, but once I discovered the internet I never returned to using them.

Oftentimes the guides on the internet are more complete than the professional ones.

The only thing I miss about the "professional" guides are the colors and pretty maps
