    Freakanomics

I'm listening to this audio book and it's pretty interesting. Here's some of the things it claims to prove:

    - abortion was the cause for the crime rate drop in the 90's
    - the "no child left behind" act has greatly encouraged teachers to cheat
    - sumo wrestling in Japan is corrupt as all hell

There's more stuff (I just started) but the one that was really interesting to me was the first one. Apparently there was a very evident correlation between the abortion rates in major cities and the drop in crime to come years later in the late 90's. Not surprisingly, unwanted kids were more likely to commit crime.

That's all for now, try the veal.

But how does less babies equal less crime?

      Crime is caused by people.
      People used to be babies.
      No babies, no people.
      No people, no crime.

So we should be encouraged to kill our children so they wont grow up and be criminals?

Some say that abortion is also the cause in the Social Security deficit.

          Nothing bad comes from abortion.

Damn. The sumo wrestling news totally bums me up.

Oh yeah, another interesting thing is owning a swimming pool is 100 times more likely to kill your child than owning a gun.

Social Security is paid by people.
                  People used to be babies.
                  No babies, no people.
No people, no one paying SS.

Heh, it's not as simple as that, but you get the idea.
And the fact that SS paid out immediately when it was established which was a big mistake.

I didn't see that it correlated years later. I thought it was talking about directly that year. My bad. I still don't know if it would be directly related to lowered crime. I'm sure there are other factors that played a larger role.

Those corny television ads probably played a big part.
