World of Warcraft question

Ok, I think I want to play the game. Never played it before, but I know the regular MMORPG stuff and what goes with it. And I am just curious and have a desire to get back into a MMORPG.

First, does anyone here still play it?

Second, if I want to gemcraft, do I need to get the expansion pack?

And two, is being a human warlock worth it?

My reletive plays it a bunch. I never really got into it (after level 20 I got bored) I'm not sure what gemcrafting is, so I think it's expansion only. My reletive plays a human warlock. He says it's better with the expansion though.

I don't know much about Alliance side, so I couldn't tell you anything about the benefits of being a human warlock over any other race warlock, so I dunno for sure. Warlock is a fun class to play, though, and gives you a pretty unique experience. It also makes for a good varying playstyle, because warlocks seem to have the most difference between their talent trees, and which way you decide to play them.

I do know that jewelcrafting is expansion only, because there's only one trainer for each faction (alliance and horde) and they're in the "expansion only" main cities. This way you can still benefit from jewelcrafting, but you can't learn it until you get the expansion.

The game is a lot of fun to play between levels 1 to 70. Once you hit 70, it becomes a repetitive crapsack, unless you like constantly doing the exact same things over and over again for weeks on end for the chance to drop that really good piece of gear. I despised the method the high end game made of "content" which was really just grinding for days to get anywhere. Not enough varying content to keep me interested. So I up and quit.

So in complete reverse order, I answered your questions.

I thought i remember seeing the two packaged together once upon a time right after Burning Crusade released, but I was just in Fry's today, and they were not bundled together anywhere. Original WoW is $20, Burning Crusade is $40, but i know you can find it on sale for $20 or $30 on occasion.

To learn Jewelcrafting you need the expansion, but you can still use items that JCs make even if you don't have it.

The only real difference between the Warlocks is the racial abilities you might want. Humans don't have any Magic Racials.

Warlock's do vary slightly, but the big talent classes are Druids and Paladins. They vary WILDLY based on talent trees.

You'll get hooked and not play other games and then keep playing even though you're not having any fun because you still haven't completed your armor set or bought your flying mount or some ****. There's so many cool games coming out soon too. You don't want to spend time that could be better spent playing one of the upcoming console games with 24 nerds with annoying nerd voices telling you what to do and dying over and over and over and over again in the same ****ty raid dungeon every night and farming rep and money every day.

Humans make ok warlocks too. Pretty much any class really.


And what Naruto says is true for most people. I haven't really had any problems with it though. I still play my PS2, Wii, and 360 all the same. I still go out with friends just as often as I used to. WoW is more of a backburner game for me and if I'm playing by myself I'm just as likely to play WoW as I am my PS2/Wii/360. Unless friends are over, then it's the PS2/Wii/360. Despite that, I've still gone from 37-70 in about a month and a half and enjoy it. Just do what you want with who you want, and don't neglect the rest of your life and it's fine. Hell, I've got it Alt+Tab minimized as I post this.

What do you think is the best build for a warlock, Affliction or Demonology?

Affliction is the best for efficient grinding, especially once you get Dark Pact. Dot, Fear, Pact, repeat. Endless grinding.

I couldn't really tell you much about Demo, I've never actually specced it. Never struck a chord with me.

I still play. Working on a complete tier 5 armour set.

If you want to gemcraft then yes, you need TBC.

I would be a gnome warlock before human. Dwarf hunter owns all though.

Well i restarted again, and a few of the pavvies play on the ... oh crap, i dont remember the name of the server since we moved. We were on Doomhammer, and then when a free transfer came up, we moved.

Trollbane. Not a whole lot of people from here really play there though and the server really sucks 'cause the population is very low. This means there won't be much on the AH and it's really hard to find a group, especially at low levels. You're better off going with a medium population server.

I grabbed one of the 14 day trial disc from work, but it makes my computer freeze upon install. Does anyone know why this is, or if there's anything I cando to prevent it?

Well, i have a few characters on Proudmore, lvl 48 hunter and lvl 13 druid, and it is a medium pop server.

I didnt know anyone had a problem with a low pop server, but oh well. Do you know anyone else that plays the game? If you have other friends that play the game, might want to create a character on that server, its not like you cant have characters on multiple servers either.

YOu will probably find that you like 2 or 3 classes and want characters of each one.

Do the newbie areas usually have very few people?

And what areas have the most people? I kinda feel lonely not seeing anyone talk. I guess I was so used to Atlus City in COH, with everyone around the statue.

Newbie areas typically have few people, because the ones who know how to play level and leave as fast as possible.

Oh, I thought there would be some reasons why people would need to go back to those areas, like in other MMORPGs.

So I am guessing they aren't main hubs in the world, but more like outposts.

The beginning areas are starter areas to get you aquainted with the game, and then by the time you reach lvl 10, you should be at the main city for your race. Stormwind and Ironforge are hubs for the Alliance races, everyone goes there. Same with Horde, Orgrimmar and the Undercity are the big hubs for Horde.

I'll admit though, i still prefer City of Heroes, but i'm enjoying WoW a little more than before, not sure why.

I once had all four of my Horde characters on Ravenholdt just hanging out in Orgrimmar, each one playing the AH or pimping out their tradeskills or just annoying the hell out of the trade channel without breaking any rules. Orgrimmar is fun.

It is at the Draeni main city, you have to take a boat there
then ask a guard, they will create a flag on the minimap for you to find the person.

From Stormguard, what is the fastest route to getting there?

If you mean Stormwind, the beginning human city...that is going to be tricky.

You have to take the tram to Ironforge, then run from Ironforge to Menethil Harbor. There you can take the Boat to Darkshore, and then the boat at the end of the pier (coming off the boat it will be the pier to the left) is the boat to the Draeni area.

If you want, i can log on my high lvl character to help you get there, otherwise you will probably die a few times on the trip to menethil

Getting back is easy, just make sure that your hearthstone is set for Stormwind and once you do what you need in the Draeni City, use the hearthstone.

Rena and I were doing a quest in Redridge the other day, and there was a cave where you have to get ore for a quest from killing gnolls or whatever they are in a cave, and he found a silver mine and a few tin mines, i think it is just north of and a little west of Lakeshire.

Edit: But i think you have to be in your low 20's to get anything from there.

Tin Deposits have the Coarse Stones. You can usually find them dotting Westfall at first and it does start appearing in Redridge. Also try Duskwood, specially around the little mountainous zone on the center. Or the werewolf mines.

But if you are looking for an awesome mining zone, Then one of my favorites has to be Stonetalon Mountains. Of course, that's more of a Horde zone, so if you plan on taking your mining pic there, be prepped for a few confrontations.

Yeap, I found some in the mine at Westfall, but it is a tad too crowded to mine constantly without being attacked. I'll try that mountain near Duskwood that you mention.

I am going to hit level 18 then get new gear then mine. That way, I'll be better prepared. And I get shoulder armor at 18! Whooh! :)

EDIT: Well I hit level 18, and now I look like a pimp. Open shirt showing off my bare chest isn't that scary of an image for a warlock.

Not much on the auction at 18, I am suprised to say. At least I got a better Curse of Agony spell upgrade.

Anything below 20 ain't really worth much on the AH. And really, I wouldn't waste the money. Cause leveling is pretty easy and you won't get much time with anything armor or weapon related you buy before you need to upgrade again. Just stay with the crappy stuff for awhile and sell everything you don't need.

You know, this topic kind of makes me sad, because you guys are all excited by everything and I've played this game to death and it's lost all the magic that it used to have.

I miss being able to explore places in that game and the feeling it used to give me. Although I can get some of it back by putting on the music again.

About that, I think we should level up our characters a bit before we start grouping up, say to level 10 or 12. There's really no reason for us to to have five level 2s fighting boars or whatever. If our characters have some experience we'll have more options in what we can do. And it's not like it takes a long time to hit double digits anyway.

No. Level 9 doesn't EXIST in the realm of 'good equipment' ever. FOR ETERNITY.

You can start talking about good equipment at 13 or 14, but it really begins a gear-grind at 19. When people twink out their toons so they can rape others in Warsong Gulch.

Every other MMO does that though. With the exception of maybe Everquest 1. Why the heck put a 25% chance to drop on a quest item you are supposed to get 16 of?

I just HATE the friggin quests in the beginning. They're no fun.

Also the fact every quest is pretty much like that. Get 32 blah blah blah, get 5 blah blah and oh yeah the drop is 5%. HAVE FUN.

I like the ones in Outland where you get to go on bombing missions. And take over a Fel Reaver to lay waste to an Annihilation Point. There's some fun ones in there, but they are FEW AND FAR BETWEEN.

Karazhan (first 10-man 70 Raid) has some fun stuff in it. But yeah, the grind to 70 is balls. Balls to that.

That's the first time I've ever been a part of a battleground that the other side got 0 points. Came realllly close once in EotS, but the dirty stinkin' Alliance got a few points at the last moment. =(

Edit: Grats, anti-hubby! :D I've had my Troll Rogue at 70 for a while now, but I don't do much with her. Finally replaced all my gear with PvP epics. I don't raid, so I have like... a PvE trinket and that's it. I'm leveling my Undead Mage, he's at 30. I'm hoping the 30 mounts come out today so I don't have to walk everywhere anymore. =(

Yeah, i got back into my guild in Proudmore and i'm loving leveling up my horde characters. I dont know if this is cheating or not, but i have a Tauren Shaman, Tauren Druid and BE Warlock, and so i'm switching off when i get tired of one for a while, or when i run out of bonus exp or something.

I'm really enjoying the Shaman, and the Warlock, and i'm already familiar with druids. I'm might try a priest sometime and go shadow spec, since i solo alot.

Mah Undead Mage is at 42 now. I got a free run through Uldaman from a couple guildies and a few rare BOEs dropped, including the pattern for Mithril Spurs and some Offhand that sold for 30G, so I have lots of moneys again for leveling. Two more levels and he'll be where he was when I deleted him last year around this time. =(
