    Commission Price Advice?

Today I found out that my local area Chamber of Commerce is looking for someone to revamp their Web site and add a calendar that would be updated every month. The person I spoke to told me over the phone to think about a price to bring up at the interview tomorrow.

But...I've never come up with a price for a commission like this. What sounds reasonable? It looks like I'd only be redoing 15-20 pages. Plus the new calendar. I've never had to propose a price before and was wondering if anyone else has experience with this sort of thing. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have no idea. sounds like you could get quite a bit, though.

How much do you think you should be earning per hour? What's the going rate for that type of service? The last thing I designed was a crummy logo, and I still had to do a little research to see how much the competition would charge.

I charge $55 an hour for graphic design, HTML/CSS or Flash work. This is moderately priced for web work, and if you have a degree in any of the above, you can get away with adding a bit more on to that. You might want to do $45 depending on your level of confidence, and maybe $35 if you feel like giving them a serious bargain. Any lower and you're ripping yourself off.

Looked up the average salary of web designer and and calculated that the hourly pay is 20-27 dollars/hour.

              That's seriously low.

We live in sticksville. If we asked for more than that we'd be laughed at.

My brother does freelance web design, and he charges pretty much exactly what BZ said. It sounds about right.

Nice. I think I want to be a freelance Web designer. It's the only thing I really feel passionate about career-wise.

Once you decide what's fair, knock it up a few bucks and that'll be your opening offer. This place is probably well aware what they're willing to spend, and they're hoping you lowball yourself.

If you're planning on making a career out of it, you should definitely put in some time researching what to charge. Rates change depending on the size of the job, what sort of work you're doing, and your own experience, just to name a few variables.

I don't actually have any experience in that area, though, heh.

                              Ew, that site is hideous.

Dude, if you're considering a career in freelance web design, I can't recommend it enough. It pretty much rocks.

One recommendation: MAKE THE CLIENT SIGN A CONTRACT, even if you know them well. It cost me a $2000 commission to learn that when a family friend refused to pay up. Also, it doesn't hurt to charge them incrementally as you finish the work.
