    Your thoughts on criticism

This is just a general topic on criticism. How do you handle it? What do you appreciate more, criticism or praise?

I ask because I have a friend from school named Marcus who praises everything he sees. Ico is the greatest game ever, and also Spyro the Dragon is the greatest game ever, and also Crap in a Box RPG is the greatest game ever.

So I'm like, "Marcus, it's nice that you're so positive, but when you compliment everything you see, your compliments don't really mean so much to me."

And some thought I was being insightful, and some thought I was being an ass.

But really, It means a lot more to me when people honestly look at something, think about it, and give honest feedback. Tell me what was good, but also tell me what you didn't like. I won't cry.

Then again, I can see how some people would like praise of any kind, because it makes them feel all tingly inside.

Here is a quote that I just remembered from years ago, that I think properly expresses my thoughts:

"If everything in life was good, how would you know it was good?"

    MY ORDERING GOES LIKE THIS:
    1. Thoughtful, constructive criticism
    2. Thoughtful, destructive criticism
    3. Blind, thoughtless love
    4. Blind, thoughtless hatred

What type of person are you, internet-wise and in real life, and what kind of feedback do you most appreciate?

    Re: Your thoughts on criticism

I think I agree with you for the most part, though sometimes it is nice just to hear good job, or nice effort. So like you either one I get (praise or criticism) I would rather have be thoughtful and somewhat specific as to what part of what I did they are talking about. But I'll take empty praise over empty criticism any day, but certainly thoughtful criticism before empty praise. But that's because I want someone to be completely honest with me. If they don't like it I would rather them say nothing than praise it.

But I think your quote has a lot of truth to it.

I criticize things less than I used to. I sorta want to get into the mindset of creating rather than critiquing.

Okay guys, call it. We have a winner for the understatement of the year category.

I myself LOVE constructive criticism. I'd rather hear the nice things about my work before you start going into the bad though. As RD said, don't just tell me it's bad, that doesn't help anyone, tell me WHY it's bad.

Being a sensitive guy, when criticism came my way, the bad kind, I always took it to heart because it was almost like saying I was a failure. I'm more fond of the good criticism, but when I get the opposite, I'm a little perturbed, but I know that it's needed for me to develop better.

I'd like to say I'm pretty balanced when it comes to peer critique. Sandwich that criticism between compliments, you know?

                            Re: Your thoughts on criticism

I don't mind criticism so long as it helps me learn how to be better at whatever it is that they're criticizing me for.

I try to handle it like I should because a lot of people mean well when they're honest. But when they're being flat out mean, I don't tolerate it.
