Hmm...is the couple registered at any stores? I always liked buying stuff that way, because you just pick from a list of stuff you already know they want.
If the couple is religious and are planning to have the baby baptized, maybe a baptism outfit?
Or maybe...
Some sort of mobile/teddy bear/attachment for the crib?
Nice diaper bag?
Crib bedding, blankets, pillows, etc.? Maybe a blanket like this.
Baby carrier (one of those sling things)?
Various assortment of bottles, teething rings, bibs, etc?

The things Kirin listed are just perfect.
Maybe you'd also consider a nice, soft sleeper for the baby - things like yellow or green are not gender specific colors and look nice.
