Goodbye every file I've ever kept over the past six years.

    Goodbye all my writings.

    So long, many porn files.

    Adios, illegally downloaded music.

Oh, bums. That's always a kick to the special places.

    How did it happen?

Yeah, I feel your pain. It always hurts to lose data.

Must be a hardware problem. I tried everything I could to fix it with no success, finally realized my only choice was to reformat. Reformatted, it still doesn't work.

Right now I'm on my circa 1999 Emachine.

Didn't this happen to you before? Or is your 1999 one the one with the awesome name?

Well depending on the type of data you should be able to easily retrieve it from the discs once you get a working computer again. http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk

Helped me get back some recorded TV shows when one of my partition tables crapped out. Works for most media types. So read up on it before you use it though, but it's really useful.

Do you have any copies of any of your old data on the other computer you're using? Surely you must share at least one or two folders of files between computers.

How much data did you lose, anyway?

Well it may still be possible to recover some of it, obviously not all of it, but reformatting doesn't actually overwrite any data at all, just clears the MBR and Partition tables.

                    Re: My computer is dead

I've pretty much accepted the data loss. I never kept any backups, so I guess I'll have to consider this as a painful lesson to learn.

In the end I guess it's not too bad. I didn't have anything incredibly important on the system. Programs can be reinstalled, plus most of my writings can be found on the internet, including this place. Itunes is letting me redownload everything I've bought, and all of my ill-gotten gains can be regained ill-gotteningly.

What bothers me is that I really think the computer is gone. Even if it can be salvalged, it's six years old and, I admit, was never well taken care of. I think the time has come to retire it. So, I'm going to have to buy a new one, which really is going to be hard on my current budget, which consists of living off my savings.

I could always send you a computer I'm not using if you're on the market for one.

Do you have any top-of-the-line models for, say, $499.95?

I've got a Macbook Pro with an Intel Core Duo processor I can give you. You can install Windows XP on it. No need to pay me anything.

If you're not into that, I can order you a laptop PC later on.

I have a computer that's going to be kicked out in a few months, give or take a few. But it's about as old as yours is, around 1998.
