Japan adds in some depressing news...

    http://www.cnn.com/2007/WORLD/asiapc....ap/index.html

A Japanese drop box for unwanted babies triggered a wave of nationwide soul searching Wednesday, a day after it was discovered a preschooler -- and not an infant -- had been dumped there by his father on its first day of operation.

"I came with Daddy," the boy was quoted as saying by the Mainichi newspaper.
    ...and that's why.

This makes me incredibly sad considering how many people try and try and try to have babies and cannot.

In September a 15-year-old junior high school boy attacked his mother, who had played an enthusiastic role in his education, stabbing her with a knife and leaving her with light injuries
Given how pressured school systems are there, 'enthusiastic' leads me to believe that the boy was driven nuts by his mother.

Well now they can have that one. So yeah he's being mean by doing it, but as long as the kid gets picked up for adoption wouldn't it be better to him to be with people who want him than a dad who doesn't. Certainly not the best situation to be in, but I think it would work out better for the kid, if we didn't put so much emphasis on people having to have their natural parents as parents. Of course maybe I think to much in the abstract.

A survellienced dropbox is a better home for a baby than a dumpster.

Yes I think so too, but in this case the baby is a 3 year old boy. Leaving him there may not be as traumatic as leaving him in a dumpster, but it's still a lot worse than leaving him there as an infant.

Yeah, this isn't like a prom night baby. This is a prom night toddler.

I totally agree. However, like Porkchop said, it's terribly sad how they could jsut "throw away" their children when so many people can't have them.

"To be fair, Japan has been in a longtime economic downturn and young Japanese children just don't provide the returns on investment that their cheaper and more plentiful Chinese competitors do.

However, like real estate, babies are a long-term undertaking and if you're not prepared to wait for their yields at maturity, then you might be better off seeking a monetary tool with more inherent liquidity.

Unfortunately, not wanting a baby doesn't stop you from having one and wanting one doesn't always result in having one. If those who have and don't want give to those who want and don't have everybody's better off.
